Hi there!

i am wanting to put Kattie and maybe Oscar on a fish oil supplement for health. Oscar is healthy and fine but I know it wont  hurt them. Kattie has chronic allergies and she is the one that could use it. My dog is on a liquid supplement of salmon oil, but I did find that it has rosemary extract in it, and that is something I want to avoid, plus Kattie will not touch any food that I have put the oil in. I need a good amount of DHA and EPA and not have to force a bunch down her. I have a human supplement store down the street and also a few high end pet stores around. The pet stores seem to only have oil for dogs and most had the rosemary extract so I am leaning towards going to the human supplement. I can pop the capsules over the food if they aren't overly fishy smelling. If either cat smells it in the food they won't eat it. If the capsule is small enough I can pill her as she is super easy to pill.Just wondering what a good brand is tht isn't too expensive and has the right amounts of DHA and EPA.

I don't have a need for any supplements for any of my pets at this time.  If I did I would use Wild Alaska Salmon oil and I would make sure it is tested for purity by the highest industry standards, against heavy metals, PCBs and other contaminants.  Your super store should be able to give you good advice on this.  I'm kind of curious as to why you want to give them a supplement.

Hi there,

The main reason that i am interested in giving omegas is that in my research in foods, especially processed foods like kibble and canned, there is far less than what is beneficial to them due to the processing. Now for the average healthy animal I think that the targeted omegas are fine in food, but for animals that need a theraputic dose of EPA and DHA, the food won't supply the amount needed. I currently have my senior dog on very high doses of omega 3 fatty acids in the form of pure salmon oil. He needs this for the antiinflammatory benefits for both his joints and skin. He is doing great. Currently he is on acana grain free dry and canned. thinkig of switching from the acana to another grain free due to the formula change and him not liking it as much. Anyways, as for Kattie, my kitty that I want to give omegas to, she has really bad allergies. they are atopic or inhaled and not food related as far as we have tried. She is in need of a theraputic dose of omegas that food isn't supplying so that is my main reason. I also would prefer capsules or something less fishy than what my dog gets as she isn't really a fish fan. I may try nordic naturals or welactin if I can get it. I just want her off steroids if possible. We tried raw, but that wasn't going well as she was getting bad diarrhea and then started to refuse out right to eat, so now we are back to high quality kibble and canned, at least til I can try the raw again.

I use krill oil - far less fishy....
This is the one I use - much easier to puncture and squeeze, and cheaper too (than mega-red): Now 500mg NKO Krill Oil

I feed raw, I just puncture the gel cap and squeeze it over the meat. Something else you might want to think about it, if this is skin allergies (scratching and such) is evening primerose oil - has been working well for Bugsy :wavey:

Cool! I know that our human supplement store has the Now brands so I am going to check out the krill oil. I think even my dog is getting tired of the salmon oil. He used to love it but now not so much. For his size, he needs 3 teaspoons of oil for the benefits. It is kinda fishy smelling and he isn't liking it as much. Krill oil if it is less fishy might be the winner. I also think they have evening primerose oil there too. What is a  dose for a 12 pound cat? I want to work on getting them on raw but we were having some issues with that so if in the meantime I can help with supplements, I'm willing to do that.

If you had some issues with raw, but want to sort things out, you might want to post a thread on our raw forum - we would love to help you to figure things out :D
The evening primerose oil dose is 500mg per day :wavey:

Welactin is very fishy, so you don't want that. I have only one cat who will tolerate the Welactin 3 for cats. I bought the NOW krill for the other two, but haven't tried it yet.

Thanks for answering!  I was just curious about it and thought I'd ask.  Try to find the most nutrient dense kibble you can afford and that the cat will actually eat.  A lot of carbs and calories in kibble so try to find the best bang for your buck
I don't know what issues you've had feeding raw and I'm not at all informed on the subject but the raw forum here is at http://www.thecatsite.com/f/65/raw-feeding-for-cats and I'm sure the folks that feed raw over there will be a huge help to you.  Best of luck!

Just got Welactin 3 for Psycho for allergies. Anyone know if this is a quality fish oil. He seems to like it. I also ordered Arcanatura which is an algae based omega 3 . Anyone have experience or an opinion on either of these oils?

Feline Omega Benefits from Veterinarian Recommended Solutions.   It was recommended by my previous holistic vet and it does not smell.  http://vrshealth.com/feline-products/feline-omega-benefits/
I've been using this exact one for a few months now with my cat, the vet prescribed it because he has seasonal allergies. Not sure if it's helping the allergies at all but his coat is super soft and shiny and you're right, zero smell!

Psycho looooves the Welactin 3 . He laps it up from the dish by itself. He loves salmon so that must be why. He seems friskier and the scratching is way down. Hope he continues to like it. Ya just never know with kitties [emoji]128579[/emoji]
