starting Oreo on wet food after years of dry....some questions about walmart Special Kitty

One night in the middle of a rain storm we heard this crying.  Went out on our back deck and there he was...barely off moms' milk standing there hissing at us and trying to look bigger than his 1 lb weight.  He had been dumped, made the 500 ft trip up the drive in the storm and grew to be the 12 lb giant lovable guy he is today.

So Oreo, one of our resident rescue inside/outside cats, has had his third bout with crystals in the last year.  We have had enough, even though we feed Blue Buffalo, he is our one non-drinker.

Taking him to the vet just results in antibiotics.

So we plan to start transitioning him to wet.

Since according to the forum any wet is better than dry, what is your opinion of Walmart brand Special Kitty?

It states "meets AAFCO" nutritional levels (whatever that means).  It gives no phosporus levels but says 6-8lb cat one can per day.

Wish there was some other way since we have a 4 cat household.  We are also retired and money is an issue but as we say around the house "anything for cats"....

Any suggestions about this food?

Some of the flavors aren't too bad. I'll buy Super Supper, Chunky Chicken & Tuna, and Mixed Grill occasionally. The tuna flavor is bad (lots of nasty fillers/preservatives), plus fish isn't good for kitties with urinary issues. And my cats won't touch the Beef & Liver flavor. I don't know if Mixed Grill is fish-free, but Chicken & Tuna and Super Supper aren't, so you might want to kep an eye on that.

But. . .Special Kitty is not much cheaper than Friskies. So I feed mostly Friskies with other brands now and then. If you have a Petsmart in the area, check out their store brand Grreat Choice. It's basically generic Friskies, and is cheaper. I prefer to feed a variety of flavors and brands to make sure my cats are getting all the nutrients they need.
