maybe his own bathtub or his own huge fishtank? That's sad that someone would actually leave their pet turtle out in the wild. I find that peculiar and sad and angry. I wonder if the petstore would want to take him?

He makes this hissing sucking sound when he scoots into his shell
. Poor guy was scared yesterday and sucked himself into his shell a lot. This morning I let him run around the back yard. He was so much happier and not nearly as frightened. Because he loved the grass so much I put in a little grass island in his new house:

And I discovered he adores nectarines. . heehee. So far no one has called. If I don't hear from his owner in a month I'll contact a rescue org like Tess mentioned. He's so cute though and the cats are getting used to him.

I took a pic of his underside. Yooohooo Dragonlady, can you help with sexing Mr Turtle??

Box turtles poop in their water (on purpose) so you will need to keep changing his water!
Catlover67, do you know why they like to poop in their water? That's exactly what Mr Turtle did. Yesterday when I gave him a small saucer of water (1/2 his size), he managed to crawl in and poop in it

What part of the country do you live? Do you have a fenced in yard? All my life we have had these kind of turtles in the yard in the city and country. When we lived in the city and had a fenced in yard we just kept the turtle in the yard and would feed them. Now I live in the country, so when I find one I get some very bright fingernail polish and paint the month/year on his back and when it dries let him go. and every year I find one of those turtle in the yard.

Wow. Looks like that little turtle wandered up to the right house!

What a nice place you've set up for him! How sweet.

Hi Clara,

We live in the San Francisco Bay Area. And yes we have a fenced in yard but there are areas that he could scoot under. Plus, cats routinely visit our backyard and try to hunt birds. I'd be worried that they would eat him. Do turtles have predators in your area?

And after you mark the turtle, you eventually see them back in your own yard?? Too cute!

I have to admit I love turtles. I had a turtle when I was a kid and I named him Harry (because he had no hair, I thought I was funny). Yeah, now I have a cat named Harry (because he has such long hair and I thought I was being clever).

Are you sure you're not gonna' keep him? It sure seems like you've set up a mighty comfy turtle condo!

LOL I don't think that turtle is lost at all, I think he(or she) knew just what they were doing wandering up to your door
. Yup this place looks like it will take good care of me, I'll stay

box turtles. I don't know why they go mostly in water. Although if I had to speculate, maybe because the water "loosens" them up?? I just know that they DO regularly potty in their shallow water dish. It can really stink too!

Very cool, Catlover, I was looking for just this very thing! And I am so curious what type of turtle Mr Turtle is, not that I am going to keep him or anything

The link is down temporarily so I'll bookmark it and go there later.

His little island is quite a sight! What a very lucky turtle you have there!!! I think he's getting attached to his new home

HAHAHA--This thread is SO cute!!
It sounds like little Tootsie-Turtle found a GREAT home--and knew RIGHT where to show up looking for a kind person to help them out!

I found a turtle in the middle of the road once, when I was driving with my daughters. I got out of the car and WAS going to pick him up to get him out of the road, so a car wouldn't hit him. HOWEVER, he looked SO meanly at me, that I decided I would get my umbrella and kind of gently guide him off the road with the handle of my umbrella. WELL, he grabbed onto that handle with his big old mouth and teeth--and I found out quickly, that he was a big SNAPPING TURTLE!!! (Can you tell I am a city-raised girl?! hahahaha
) So, with my girls HOWLING laughing at me, I carried the snapping turtle off the road and found a little creek, and left him on the side of the creek in a quiet place! BOY, was I ever glad, that I didn't try to pick him up with my hands!!!
