I need to know tips and everything or how they dealt with it? What did your vet said? I took my cat to the vet in jan her first seizure was december 31st. I never saw anything like it i was panicing didn't know it was a seizure i thought she was choking or dying. She had her 4th seizure so far that I have seen I don't know if she has them when i'm gone but I really know for sure yet. but all i saw was 4. My vet told me she mayhave epilepsy. My vet doesn't recommend treatment yet until she has more. her bloodwork came out ok. She is strictly indoors and i make sure nothing that harms her will harm her she sticks to my room since it is safest. How do you deal with a epilepsy cat? when did the vet start treatment? Can they grow out of it or will they have more episodes? My cat last 2 episode where very very very super short 10 secs. Her last seizure she came out of it and in 10 minutes she is friendly and puring at me. Her first one she became confuse for 30-40 minutes sniffing around then ate/drank alot then slept. It worries me though about these seizures. I hope she get on meds if they progress worst i been telling my vet when she has seizures and he been talking to me about them but I like to hear from other owners.

Your cat probably does not have epilepsy.  Check the ingredients in your cat food.  If it contains rosemary extract, stop using that food immediately and find one that does not have it.  Rosemary extract is used as a preservative/antioxidant.  Rosemary extract can be beneficial to humans, but very harmful to cats and small dogs and can cause epileptic symptoms among others.

Google "rosemary extract" and an article will come up exlaining rosemary extract is a neurotoxin for cats and small dogs.

I hope your kitty will be ok.

Cats will vary in their sensitivity to substances which can cause seizures.  Note the use of 'can' not 'will'.  More on this at Messybeast - read down the page:

http://www.messybeast.com/teatree.htm
Essential oils which contain phenols are particularly toxic to cats and cause liver damage. These include Oregano, Thyme, Eucalyptus, Clove, Cinnamon, Bay Leaf, Parsley and Savory

Essential oils which contain ketones cause neurological symptoms. These include: Cedar Leaf*, Sage*, Hyssop*, Cyprus*, Lavender, Eucalyptus, Mint ,Caraway*, Citronella ,Clove*, Ginger*, Chamomile, Thyme and Rosemary (those marked * give particular cause for concern).

Hi

My cat has had epilipsy - seizures for past two years, they last about 30 seconds and she frails on the floor. As the period between seizures is about 8 weeks my  vet has not prescribed any meds yet, but pheno is the med of choice and it can control seizures but you still get break thru seizures in some cases.  There are natural remedies too - valerian drops - non alcohol glycerine based liquid valerian a few drops twice a day have helped people I know.  There is so much information and support if you know where to look and I belong to a yahoo group and they live eat and breath epilipsy.

http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/epi-felines/

Most of us have found there is no rhyme or reason why their cats are like that but some factors can be:

flea treatment, new carpets or furniture.  Has anything changed in your house?

If you keep a diary of seizures it can help to pinpoint a pattern.

They are very scary when they first happen but once you know more you are more ready and do not panic,

Use rescue remedy too to calm your cat down after a seizure and if you see the signs of an imminent seizure - I can tell when my cat starts twitching and obsessive grooming.

If you are out and not sure if your cat had a seizure you can sometimes tell if there is a patch of urine or maybe drool down her coat or her eyes are wide, another sign if actute hungry and affection.

Re Rosemary - in the interest of balance there is another side to the argument:

I will be pleased to answer any more questions but I strongly urge you to join the yahoo group where we are very supportive.

regards

Welcome to the forum, silvertabbies!

If you noticed, I had recommended (above) the Yahoo group of which you're a member. It's great to get the endorsement of actual group members, people who really understand the huge benefits of participation......even joining up just to read other peoples' stories, questions and the answers from experienced members is an amazing learning experience.

Now, personally I'm a bit concerned with something you wrote:

Frankly, I don't know for certain that there's any "balance" to be struck when it comes to Rosemary & cats....that's not a half-hearted "I disagree with you", it's really a statement that I do not know whether/not Rosemary - in any form - is safe for felines.

The reference link you provided comes from a woman who is an artist by profession (34 years) and who, after retiring from that, appears to have somehow taken to consulting about (primarily) dog food - her bio is here http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/the_art_work_of_linda_arndt.htm

Now, it's beyond question that cats are quite distinct from dogs in their ability to tolerate many substances. I would certainly not accept broad statements from an artist as input for my cats' nutrition.

For me, then, in the absence of certainty, I'd be recommending no Rosemary for cats.

Oh, oh....

maybe, if there's to be more on Rosemary, a new thread should be started...???

Hello White Shadow

The link to Rosemary I gave because it had been mentioned in the thread and it was fresh on my mind as we had recently discussed this on the epi cat forum.

It seems it is in some cat commercial cat foods and I encountered that link while searching for cat foods with rosemary extract in, the other members found it interesting so I thought I would post here too in my message about epilipsy - I am in no way recommending rosemary and people should make their own minds up and research themselves.

Apologies for posting my real name below my message - I just jumped in because I could give good practical experience of seizures.
