Kitten Sustained Injury in Carport

A little over 2 weeks ago, a 2-3 month old kitten was dumped very close to my house. She is very sweet and needed help, so I took her in. I named her Sherry. I have two other outdoor cats, both of which I also acquired in a similar way. Sherry easily got settled in and used to the place and the routine of me coming and going to work. When I was coming home the other day down the driveway, Sherry ran towards my car. I slowed down to about walking speed in the car (less than 5 mph) and got into the carport. I felt something on the right side of the car, and immediately knew something had happened. I went to her, and found that her leg appeared that it was hurt as she was holding it outward from her body, and she had defecated on herself a bit. I was terrified because I wasn't sure how serious it was (this was after 5 pm, so a vet wasn't open). The injury was on her right back leg. She went to sit down and recover, and after about 20 minutes, she began to walk around without a limp and wanted to come in.

Over the last 36 hours I have noticed this: There were never any outward/flesh injuries. There is no swelling. She seems to walk just fine. She doesn't/can't run or jump because of this injury and is less active than usual (not tearing all over the house like she usually does). She still likes to play some, still loves to eat, and uses her litterbox like a boss. Sometimes when she tries to walk/run a little faster on the old hardwood floor, she slips and her leg comes out to the side. She picks herself up and keeps going. I have also noticed that the leg sticks out a little when she sits up (on her haunches...not sure how to describe it), like she can't keep it in as much. About an hour after it happened, I found one tiny blood spot on the floor and couldn't figure out where it came from. This morning I saw a very small amount of blood on her anus after she used her litterbox to go #2. I guess this is some sort of hip injury, but I don't know the extent of it since she is doing some things normally, and she still seems to be in good spirits. She is loving that I have been letting her sleep inside in the evening/overnight, so that will be the case from now on, and I think I will transition to making her a completely indoor cat. Does anyone know what could possibly be going on? I know the first response will be to take her to a vet, and I am off from work tomorrow and may try to do that, but other than that, what do you think? I'm just not sure what a vet could do other than tell me what is wrong. I have been keeping a close eye on her injury. It has only been a day and a half, and I am hoping this is something that gets better with time. I have just felt sick about the whole thing, and although it appears that this may not be too serious, I am just not sure. Thanks for your help!

Welcome to TCS.  I am sorry your first post had to be about your injured kitten.

There is no way to judge how serious Sherry is injured without an x-ray.  It could be something the cat can live with or it could be an injury that will get worse with time.  As you already said, your cat needs to be seen by a vet.

She could have a displaced hip, but also some internal soft tissue injury. I would get her to a vet as quickly as you can as the sooner it is diagnosed and treated the greater the likelihood of a full recovery. Don't beat yourself up over it - accidents happen, but you owe it to her to try to put it right.

Thanks for the insight and advice. I decided to take off a couple of hours from work, and she has an appointment this afternoon. It's all I've been able to think about. Hopefully she will be ok. Thanks again!

Please post back and let us know what the vet says and how she progresses.

We just got back from the vet a little while ago. The x-ray was clean, so he thought it might be a pinched nerve or an inflammatory issue. He gave her an anti-inflammatory shot, told me to restrict her movement, and said she should be fine after a while. I'm relieved; hopefully by the time a couple of weeks goes by she will be running and jumping just like she used to.

I'm so glad to hear the good news! Mac was 6 weeks old when I rescued him and so malnurished. He broke his leg just a few weeks after I got him by jumping off a chair. Vet said his bones were soft because of malnurishment. He was in a cast for 3 weeks.  :(   He is now almost 5 months and no residual effects. Kittens heal quickly. She should be on the mend soon. Keep us informed!
