I'll start with a bit of background information.

I live in a small town of about 113 people and a 30 minute drive away is a large city. People come out here to "drop" unwanted animals, usually cats.

Outside another local woman and I feed and try to care for a revolving door of anywhere from 10 or more cats. At one point I brought in what seemed to me to be the only female either able to reproduce (because she had already had at least three litters of four kittens) so she could have them inside where it was safe and I could then get her fixed and try to find good homes for the kittens. I was able to get the two males and the mother fixed but sadly I couldn't afford to get the two females fixed as well so I intended to keep them inside only to prevent pregnancy. Sadly one of the females went into heat at about a year old and snuck outside when one of my kids went out the door and left it open. Although she was only out of sight for 20 minutes before I found her, she ended up pregnant. About a week before she gave birth she started looking very skinny and then I noticed she was losing hair on her hind quarters, she also sneezes a lot. Now she seems to be growing that hair back but losing it on her front legs and is still losing weight. She's terrifyingly skinny and I'm really worried. I don't know if this has something to do with her getting pregnant or what but she was very healthy and honestly a very beautiful cat before.

I'm not sure what to do at this point. I know most will say take her to the vet and if I could afford it, I would. I have exhausted every effort to tame and find homes for the feral kitties outside as well as the 8 I have inside the house. I have called shelter after shelter for someone to help find homes and even had a local vet offer to fix the cats for me for $35 each. I just sadly can't afford this. My love for animals is putting me deep into debt and keeping me awake at night. I'm trying to take this all one step at a time but it's very overwhelming so please be gentle with responses.

Thank you for your efforts in savings these fur babies!  Couple questions for you regarding this particular one.  When did she give birth?  Is she still nursing, or what is the status there?

I'm just wondering if maybe I should have this thread moved to the "Pregnant Cats and Kitten Care" forum, if she's still nursing?  Are the kittens ok?

The kittens are chunky furry and healthy thankfully. Kittens are three months old and she still periodically allows them to nurse. I've gone the route of wet food and bought Vetscription Sure Shot liquid wormer hoping it might be worms but nothing seems to have improved anything.

Is she and has she been eating kitten food due to nusing. If not she might be nutritionally deprived right now.

A mother kitten needs to be free fed just as a kitten should. Maybe you could supplement her with some dry kitten food (Purina kitten chow isnt to expensive and would do more help than not.

I sure hope she can pull out of whatever this is. It sounds like you are a very caring person, taking on this family. The world needs more people like you and the rest of us here too that find pleasure in loving and helping cats!!!  :)

I wouldn't go into dry.... If you can afford, I would stay on wet.... Kitten food though, as much as she wants to eat. My fear with dry is causing some digestive upset on her and at this point, that's the last thing you want. Wet, IMHO not only it is a healthier choice, but for her now I think it is safer.
When I used to feed dry and wet, any time i went from all wet to dry or introduced a new dry, I had digestive problems - and they did not resolve quickly :nono:
I would say feed her all the wet she wants to eat, kitten food, with the most amount of protein you can afford
And as soon as you can get her to the vet - you want to know what is wrong with her. Lock her in with 7 keys as we say in my country, so she doesn't get pregnant again - I am afraid a pregnancy on her health state would be devastating, if she even survived :(..... and she can get pregnant rather quickly once she has kittens, so - no cats in, and she can't go out until she is fixed :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

I switched to wet when she started losing the weight. I even make sure her and all the kittens are separated during feed times because she acts very timid around the three other very large males that are inside (All are fixed). She hisses a lot when they get close, which she didn't before her pregnancy. All but one are her brothers. Could all this be linked to stress over the other cats and if so, how do I reduce the stress on her without being forced to put the boys outside. Sorry for all the questions. We were a one cat family before all this and aside from regular check ups he has never had health issues.
