so my cat has been the picture of health this past few months/year, but lately she's been eating everything that we give her and she still wants more! she's perfectly healthy otherwise- no weight loss/gain, normal urinnation/drinking, normal active ness, not overweight or underweight, normal coat- just normal except for this sudden interest in food! could it be hyperthyroidism?????? or diabetes?????????????????? shes a young cat, only 2 years old, and we love her to death

At many vets, you can call and set up a phone call consult free of charge and they can give you an idea of what might be up and tell you if you should bring your kitty in. With how young and healthy she is, my suspision is pregnancy, if that is a possibility.

not possible, as she is neutered and is an indoor-only cat
that sounds like a good idea, calling the vet
but what would you do in the means of giving her food? would you give her the amount she normally has or the amount she wants? and also, besides having an automatic food dispenser (that works really well), we have this blue toy which she can bat around and it has holes in it so that food can come out... what should we do about that? because the purpose of the toy is so she can be very active with it but what she did is figured out a way to get the top off of the toy and eat the food that way

It sounds like she may not be getting enough nutrition from the food she is eating. I recommend a diet change. Get her on a schedule and feed a high quality grain free canned diet.

Another thought is, cats often act hungry when they are bored. Be sure to play with her every day. Again, scheduled play times work best. Cats thrive on routine.

If she is fed the same times every day, and played with the same times every day, this will go a long way toward easing any anxiety over food she is experiencing.

I would call the vet before any changes are made so as not to mask anything. I know in humans and cats an insatuable appetite can point to diabetes. That was the first clue, then thirst, when my sisters cat wa s diagnosed with it. Not saying he has it just giving my opinion as to why I would check with the vet first.

Well, it's fall, and most animals eat more then, putting on fat for the winter.  It COULD be that.

Have you made any other changes?  New food?  New house?  Anything at all?

No changes, nada.
Actually, she might just be hungry from *extra play*, as we are worried about her getting overweight and we are keeping a more consistent play routine. we have been giving her more catnip, though- not to eat, in the form of a banana-shaped pouch...could that be affecting it?
we are currently feeding her a mix of Purina and Iams, which the vet reccommended.
what's the deal with diabetes? what happens if your cat has diabetes?

everything else (pooping, peeing, drinking, sleeping, playing, grooming) has been completely normal...is this a situation I should be worried about? just to make sure, though, I will call the vet tomorrow.

That's good to know. Angel has been eating more the past few days too. After he finishes what I give him, he will sit there waiting for me to look over, & see him just sitting there patiently waiting for more.

He usually gets 1/4 - 1/2 a raw Bravo pattie. (2xs/day, then a small amount of Natural Bal. or Natures Variety dry to "snack" on later in the day & night)

I think he ate about 3/4 of a pattie this morning. The last time we were at the Vet's he weighed 14.8. I'm sure he's 15 by now.

He's a long boy, so that's still not to bad, but that's the most he's ever weighed, & don't want it to exceed that.
