Hi, everyone,

My name is Meg and I have a four year old cat named Paisley. I've joined this site mostly because I'm struggling with helping my cat through an unknown allergy - either food or environment. It's been a long year and I want to do the best for my cat and, with a limited income, I'd love to see if anyone else has some tips and tricks that will help me from making useless mistakes in this journey.

Glad to be here!

Meg

My cat (a pure bred russian blue!) is allergic to the commercial cat foods (think whiskers/go cat) and has to eat science diet/tuna. (otherwise his hair falls out!)

Could you spend a little more (i know cat food can be expensive!) but in my instance, it really helped!

Hi meck01,

Thanks for your reply! Aw, Russian Blues are so cute! I'm glad you had good luck by switching foods.

Thankfully, I have been able to work with the vet to give her a good quality food. It just seems that she's allergic to every one I try! Paisley is on Royal Canin Hypoallergenic Venison and Pea at the moment. Her scratching has not improved too much over the last few months, so my vet is recommending for me to try a homemade pork recipe or this wicked expensive food from a company called Rayne's. The protein in that food would be kangaroo!

I mean, what cat eats kangaroo? I don't think she'd be hunting down one of those on the streets - not even if we lived in Australia! Lol

*sigh* It's all just a little bit crazy... I'm sure I'll be posting in the health threads soon...

Thanks again!

Meg

Welcome!  I hope you find answers for your sweet kitty.  (LOL about the kangaroo.  The "couldn't hunt it down" argument is the same thing that makes me hesitant to feed beef.)

Hi and welcome! I am new as of yesterday myself and will be postings intro soon. I have a cat with irritable bowel disorder that started to make his fur fall out! None of the prescription meds were working for him so we switched to a frozen raw food called Natural Instincts and feed rabbit when it's available or chicken when it is not. They also have other proteins such as Bison but the rabbit has worked wonders. I understand your reaction to the kangaroo as I had the same surprise when switching to a novel protein, but it seems as though kitty has much less of a chance of being allergic if its something new. My cat responses most positively the further we got away from grains and I hope that you find what works soon! I have a friend with a cat with symptoms similar to yours that can only eat fish based food, allergic to the rest. Keep trying, I know how frustrating it is, everyone here seems amazing so glad we both came for support!

Hello and welcome from Toby Tyler and Pals.  Mr. Toby crossed the rainbow bridge, but when he was about 9 years old he started loosing big clumps of fur on his hind legs.  We switched his diet to Royal Canin Hypoallergenic and it solved the problem.  He was also a CKD cat so I was trying to figure out foods that would not compromise his remaining kidney function.  This diet was rather expensive as I recall.  I wish I would have found TCS then!   I think you will find the Nutrition Forum very helpful for support, information and advice.

Hi, my Buster was really ill as a kitten and would just purge from both ends, It was horrible for him. My vet recomended Royal Canin sensitivty control (both wet and dry) and he's great on it. It's really expensive to buy from the vet but works out alot cheeper over the internet. If you want to try before you buy, if you get in touch with Royal Canin direct they are usually really helpful and will send you some free samples!

Good luck with it
