actually radio stations pay royalty fees so that the songwriter gets paid everytime their song gets played.

Ok but what about the people who record songs from them? How can threy control that? They can't tap into your radio as far as i know.
most people won't take the time to tape record 2000+ songs from the radio and trade them with thier friends.
Maybe not but i don't trade with my friends either. We have our file sharing turned off.

I haven't joined in this discussion previously and it is so lengthy that I didn't go back and read the whole thread, so I apologize if I am repeating something that has already been said.

I believe that theft is wrong....period! Downloading music without paying for it is just the same as putting a CD in your purse and walking out of the store without paying. It is theft.

It is no more correct to steal from a rich person (wealthy musician)than from a poor person. If it is correct to steal from the rich, why don't we all just invade the homes of the wealthy and walk out with anything we like? We don't do that because it is wrong.

Also remember that the wealthy artists are not the only people who earn a salary from making a CD. When you steal a song you are also stealing the pay check from a bunch of every-day Joe's who need that money to pay the rent.

It is wrong to steal!

IMO!

and with respect i must say that IMO its not stealing. Like i said earlier i'll call the police and see if they arrest me do you think they will?

There is often a diffence between things that are illegal and things that are wrong. For example, it is not illegal to adopt a cat and then do nothing more than feed and water it for the rest of its life, but it is wrong to treat the animal that way. There are many, many other examples of things that are not illegal but that are wrong. In my opinion, while you may not get arrested for downloading a song, it is just as wrong as stealing a CD from the store.

What a sad place our society would be in if people based their behavior only on what is arrestable versus not arrestable rather than on what is right versus wrong.

Well i don't considrer myself to be a crminal nor do i consider the millions of other people who download crminals either. If you want criminals look at rapists, robbers, murders not ordinary people.

Oh and before you start calling people "thiefs" please make sure you know what you are talking about. I have no criminal record and have NEVER been in trouble with the law once. 99% of my music was downloaded way before they decided to do lawsuits. I am NOT a criminal or anything close to it. Just wanted to make that clear.

Edited to add i wil not be checking this thread anymore as it is obviously something we can not agree on and i see the direction where its going and thats not a good thing,so i will not be posting on this topic.

This probably wont do any good as youre not going to check this thread anyway, but..

Just because 99% of the stuff you downloaded was done before the lawsuits, doesn't make it less illegal. I don't have a criminal record either, but when it comes down to brass tacks, I guess you could say that I was a thief.

I mean really, the law is the law, breaking is breaking it, weather you get caught or not.

But I guess, situational ethics play a big part in ones ability to justify thier actions any way they can...

Please remember, this is a forum for the discussion of controversial topics. Everyone is free to express their opinions, but personal attacks are not welcome.

This discussion is getting rather heated-please take a step back before you respond.

The LOS ANGELES TIMES reports that VIVENDI UNIVERSAL will cut back UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP operations in 71 countries to drop $200 million in annual costs. UMG will cut 1,350 jobs worldwide and will outsource some distribution functions. While label executives told the TIMES they don't plan to drop acts from its four major labels, scouting activity in areas where acts tend to sell only within their own countries will be reduced. UMG Chairman DOUG MORRIS told the paper that Internet file-swapping and CD piracy are to blame for the label's troubles, calling the cuts "evidence that what people are doing is not a victimless crime. This is almost directly attributable to the piracy we've seen."

EEPS! That really sucks for the people who work at the music companies!
