My cat, Mattie, came to us as a stray cat.  She was diagnosed with herpes and her left eye has always been an issue.  She gets a 500 mg. lysine tablet two times a day sprinkled in her food.  Most of the time the lysine keeps it knocked back.  From time to time, I have to take her for a vet check and get some kind of eye salve.  Is there anyone here that deals with this issue with a cat.  I would like to hear your experience.

Hi, Yes, I deal with this with Angel. He has been on lysine for 3 yrs now, so haven't had this happen in a while, But when it "acts up" he usually needs eye drops. The Vet has always given us the Neo Poly drops, & those have worked great. The only time they stopped working was when we had to use them a few times to close together, so I think over the years, he became immune to them, so we were given another one. I'm not home now, so can't tell you the name of those, but they had to be kept in the 'fridge.

Another rout you can/may want to try is some Homeopathic drops called "Eyes See Clearly."  I have only ordered them once, a while ago, so don't

remember the company name, but I can find out (kept invoice) later, if you want, or you can PM Stephanietx. She is who I learned about them from.

Also, you can use Colloidal Silver. (10ppms) (10ppms means it's broken down the smallest, for better absorption). I love CS. I try to always keep

some around. It's the only thing I feel like Is safe to put on Angel if he needs a topical for something, just in case he licks it. (you know how hard it is to keep a kitty from licking something).

I hope that helps!

Just PM me if you want any of that info.

Perla has a herpetic left eye. It is constantly watery. At times though, it will flare and get worse. The eyelids get sores on them as well. She gets 1000 mg. of Lysine a day - two doses at 500 mg. That is the correct dose according to her eye specialist. I have not tried the Eye See Clearly BUT want to get that ordered as well. Perla has had many different eye drops and eye salves. None of which work very well other than the Cidofovir eye drops from her specialist. Those drops are extremely expensive - $160.00 a bottle :shocker: Perla has insurance so I was able to get them. They really did work as they are anti-viral against ocular herpes. SO (AND KNOCK WOOD>>>>>) far she has been cleared for over two months since her 6 week treatment of the Cidofovir drops. :cross:

ALSO .... and this is OTC and the specialist recommended this as well are the Ketotifen allergy drops. http://www.walgreens.com/marketing/...info1.html?particularDrug=Ketotifen&id=655961 Perla started with some redness/squinting last month and I used these drops twice daily for a week. It completely cleared up. Again, though, Perla has a chronically weepy eye which will probably never go away. We are managing her flare ups now and things are improving.

I have also used the Colloidal Silver eye wash. At 50 ppm - diluted to that strength with distilled water. Up to 50 ppm is safe to use in the eye as a wash. I really didn't see an improvement with using the CS wash though. Vibes for your Mattie :rub: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

It was always Angel's left eye too. "What is it with the left eyes??"

Feralvr,  Could you PM me & tell me what Pet Insurance you have? I have been looking at some, & trying to find a good recommended one.

I looked at a quote from Pet Plan that looks good. (Silver, mid level. I put in 90, or 100% back w/ a 50.00 deductible, & the quote was around

$25-27/mo.)  I know Carolina mentioned one she has/ likes on a thread once, but don't remember.

Thanks!  (maybe I should start a thread about that)

As soon as I can get the care Credit paid down from the bladder stuff in August, I want to get him some Ins.

Absolutely LOVE Pet's Best Insurance. http://www.petsbest.com/why-pets-best/about-us Carolina and another friend uses this insurance for their cats. I have three of my six insured at the $100.00 deductible. I am going to insure the other three very soon. They are incredible and the customer service is top notch. Reimbursements come very, very quickly. ;)

Question (may be silly) - how did the vet diagnose the eye herpes: blood test, eye test ?

One of my cats had a sore (left) eye  three times this Summer, so I went to the Ophtalmologist Vet and he said it wasn't herpes but only a problem with "funny" eyelashes which hurt his eye once in a while. I'm sure he's right, but I was wondering if I should have a blood test or some other test to be 100% sure.

You know, it has been too long ago for me to remember.  I know it was not diagnosed with any blood test.  I think maybe just by examination and facts presented at the time.  She was a stray.

Yup, same w/ Angel. Just an exam & the Vet said that's what he had. I was glad she told me about lysine & nutritional yeast. I've put them in his food ever sense!

You know I am really beginning to wonder about Mattie now because she has never had sneezing, respiratory or any other problems other than the left eye.  Is that typical of herpes.  Also, she has been on lysine two times a day now for a long time.  It controls the runny eye but never really stops it.  Anyone else with this experience.

Hmm, that's a tough one. Angel has never had a upper respiratory problem either. They also say his lungs sound good @ check ups. He has sneezed, but not often & it's so random, I don't think it's related. His only symptom was the "third eye" showing up & being pink. It was never runny, just would sometimes get those dark brown/reddish eye boogies. (dry)

Maybe being on the lysine has kept all of that at bay. That would be a good thing!
