My brother and his wife just went into the delivery room. She's 4 days overdue and I guess it is time...

I just talked to him over the phone and he said that she's already having an epidural and a shot of pitocin to make the whole thing faster. Can't say I'm thrilled about all of this intevention... He said she wasn't in much pain but her friends told her she should go with an epidural
Mind you, I'm not saying I will definitely not have one in two and a half months, but seems to me you should at least see if you need it first. The medical staff were only too happy to give her the shot - easier for them with one less screaming woman.

Anyway, I hope it all goes through well and she can embrace her new daughter soon

Well, despite the medication/intervention, I hope all goes REALLY well and that she'll be fine and the baby is squealing and healthy!!!!!!!

Hope everything goes well and you'll soon have a happy, healthy family memeber! I've had pitocin and it's a much harder, painful labor. I didn't have an epidural but I wish I had in retrospect!
My other kids I didn't have pitocin and no epidural or drugs and did fine.

Keeping our paws crossed for her. btw, I find that they like to have patients use this stuff since they get more money, we paid a hefty price just for the epidural which was billed separately along with other costs. I still would do epidural though, probably not as much cuz I felt like a whale!

My mom just phoned and SIL she's 9 cm apart now! The doctor says the baby may be out in the next couple of hours!

BTW - we don't pay for anything in deliveries (we actually get a government grant) and doctors still encourage women to take the epidural. I guess they just find the women easier to handle that way

Congratulations on the new niece or nephew. I know one thing for sure, if I was about to have a baby, I'd go for ANYTHING it took to ease the pain.

LOL Hope - I asked for the epidural - I ended up having to have a caesarean because I couldnt dilate past 3cm. Also, my son's head was too big, it was pushing my hip bones apart and thats where all the pain was, it was unbearable!
(sorry to go offtrack Anne)

I hope that all goes well. Re the pitocin, it is just more of what her own body is already producing...and if it will help her contractions be more effective, that's a good thing (imo).

I used to tell my patients who after a long and/or difficult labor that if the epidural would help relax them enough that the contractions could do their job of moving the baby down, so they could deliver without surgery, why not? Effluerage (?bet I mis-spelled that), and breathing techniques, back massage...sometimes it is not enough for a posterior-presentation etc.

anyhoo...that was my philosphy when I was working as an labor and delivery rn. I wish her a easy delivery and say "congratulations!" on the new life, in advance,

Mazal Tov!

She was born during the night - while we were asleep
My mom was at the hospital and told us it's a beautiful baby girl. She weighs about 3Kg (approx. 7 pounds).

All is fine with mom and baby, though it ended up being a vacuum birth. I will be calling them soon. Need to find out the name of my new niece! It's their first baby. My other brother (both younger than me) had his firt baby half a year ago - so this is my second niece. My parents will be having their first 4 grandkids (including Ron and his brother) within less than 2 years!

Thanks for the good vibes everyone!!!
