Hello all!

I have a beautiful black female, 4.7 months old, who was just spayed today. Her name is Jinx. I have an older Burmese mix, a male named Milo, that was neutered at five months old about four years ago. His recovery was swift and he was on his feet and at his usual antics within hours. I know that it won't be the same with my little girl.

The surgery went well, she's home and safe, and she has access to water.

She just can't seem to get comfortable to rest. She is under the anesthetic still (heavily, haha) and right now she is dozing off with her booty in the air. Is there anything I can do to make her more comfortable? My bed is where she normally sleeps, and it is on the floor (as we are expecting a new bed frame in a few weeks) so it is accessible but she prefers the floor. Is it normal for her to sleep so strangely?

She is also shaking, which I know is because she is cold as a result from the surgery and anesthetic - the house is 78 degrees, is that warm enough for her to be comfortable? She is also twitching pretty often but I assume it's also because of the anesthetic. I was given pain medication in case.

She just looks so uncomfortable right now.

Any advice? Will she be more comfortable when the anesthetic wears off?

Thanks!

- Krystyna

My kittens all acted a bit "out of it" the day of surgery but by the second day they were themselves again, playing and wrestling with each other like nothing had ever happened. I couldnt make them rest. lol

Good to know then! When my mother's cat, Allie, was spayed, I was maybe nine years old so I don't remember the process at all. My poor Jinx is so confused.

Sometimes the anesthesia can make them restless and antsy.  After his neuter, my cat wandered the house for 2 hours before finally settling down.  This was after staying overnight at the vet's office, too!!  Just keep an eye on her and let the anesthesia wear off.  Offer her a small serving of food since it's been awhile since she's eaten and she's been on medication.  It may be tomorrow before she really seems to get back to normal.

We had kitten done a few weeks ago.

She stayed at vets overnight but was home the day of surgery (dropped her off previous evening, picked her up around 7~8hrs after surgery)

She was fine and happy to be home, little sleepy but still tried to play and jump around (but couldn't)

Had stitches out 10 days later (week ago today)

She does seem to get cold real easy but she is real 'slim' and has a large 'bald spot' on belly

Will yours let you pick her up and 'rock her' (like a baby,  our kitten seems to like it)

When we had Kat done about 2 yrs ago he didn't come home until next day, took him a lot longer to get back to normal (but, he was at least 18 months old at the time)

Hope it all works out soon, I'm still having problems with Kat and kitten since she was done (he hisses at her a lot)

Thank you for the kind replies!

Jinx's anesthetic seems to have worn off and she has been laying near me all night snoozing away. She isn't interested in water or food just yet but I've offered both. She has been licking her belly (not the wound, as I notice the sutures are a little sharp - maybe to ward her off?) where there is a lack of fur (as if to say "Hey, where'd it go?!") and she has been enjoying the loving the family has been giving her.

We just had Sassy done Tuesday morning.  Tuesday night, she didn't touch food or water, was clearly uncomfortable.  Wednesday, she started eating a little.  We gave her the pain medication (buprenex), and she slept a lot.  Didn't move around a lot.

Thursday, she's eating pretty well and not showing a lot of signs of pain.

Glad to hear she's returning to normal.  She is licking her bald spot because it doesn't smell like her.  It's like when kitties lick after you've petted them.  They're getting your scent off.  Keep an eye on her and be sure her incision doesn't become inflamed or irritated looking.  If needed you can put a baby onesie on her or if she's small enough a stretched out tube portion of an old tube sock.  (Cut the foot part off)

One problem I've had since Pauli (kitten) was spayed, Kat  won't accept her any longer.

They would play together and sleep together, ow he's hissing, huffing and swatting at her plus doesn't want to be in the house with her.

They seem to be OK when outside

I don't have a clue what the problem is, obviously she smells different but Kat doesn't seem to even recognise her

I'm so grateful for this thread! I'm getting my girl done in a week or two and reading your posts was just what I needed.

Jinx is gorgeous!  @kmuree, silly question - is she acting different so far? Personality wise, is she changed?  I'm kinda terrified that my kitten will lose her trust and friendliness after being cut and such.

Jokasta, she is just as loving, silly and dorky as she was before the surgery! No changes that I can see yet (except that she is particularly whiny about being kept confined to a room).
Thank you so much! I think she's the prettiest kitty ever (but as her Mama, I am biased, haha!)

I really need help though, guys.

She's suddenly pulling at her stitches.
I tried to get her an e-collar but wouldn't you know it, only Petco sells them (and for $40?!) in my city and my vet's office closed twenty minutes before I caught her doing it.

How large of a tube sock should I use? A long sock with the toes cut off? How far down do I put it over her body? I'm worried about suffocating her wound but I'm not sure if that's a valid concern when she's threatening to undo her doctor's hard work.

Just use a men's tube sock top.  Cut off the foot part above the ankle.  You want it to be snug, but not too tight that it cuts off her circulation.  You want it to cover her from her chest down to her hind legs, beyond the incision.

Things finally look like they are back to normal with Pauli and Flash, took a lot longer than expected for them to become friends again

Pauli didn't have any 'personality' changes but Flash obviously didn't like the 'vet smell' on her when she came home and must have felt threatened or something?

She is still as crazy as ever with far too much energy for him (he's about 3~4 yrs old, shes about 6~7 months)

If your interested, I've posted a lot about it and several pictures in the 'New Addition' thread

Thank you for the info and the link! :) Jo's spaying is scheduled for this Friday evening, i.e. I'm totally and completely freaking out.
