OMG! lt reminds me of politicians and their glib, glossed-over responses. Some of these questions/answers made me lawl - others got my back up.

What do you guys think about a vet promoting this kind of information?

Well, the page I see is linked to the Pet Food Association of Canada, so the Q&A comes as no surprise. :lol3: Are you saying your vet has this info up - or has a link to it? I guess I see nothing technically wrong with doing that. But given that diet is the foundation of health, I'd rather have a thinking vet, not a spokesperson for the pet food industry.

Exactly! Thank you MattsMom for your candor. Any of us who want a well-rounded education on what is and is not good for our cats, will search every source of information they can find. My issue with this FB-posting is that it is essentially an advertisement veiled as nutritional information.

OH! Gotcha! You should comment!
Well, l did! And they removed the post entirely!

Here's what l wrote ( l probably should have asked for suggestions first):

I'm disappointed that you would post only the information being pushed by the pet food industry, without being counterbalanced by pet (particularly feline) nutritionists. By their own admission on the About page, their mission is not to promote the health of animals through providing species-appropriate ingredients (meat), rather it is, "To instill in the Canadian consumer confidence about the wholesomeness and quality of commercially-prepared pet foods ..."  So essentially it is an info-mercial. Some of the statements are erroneous and/or very misleading, and it is unfortunate that people will read it on a vet page and believe that it is being endorsed. It would be nice if we could have a more rounded perspective on the dietary needs of carnivores (eg. Dr. Pierson, CatInfo.org ) on which to base our decisions for the health of our pets.

Thanks
l'm glad l didn't offend them since l really, really like this Animal hospital, and all their doctors and staff. They're quite progressive, so l think that's why l was so surprised to see that particular post on their page.

Anyway, my cats' vet sent me a PM shortly after:

Cranberry Hill Animal Hospital

  • Hi Andrea! [Name Withheld] here. Thanks for the comments regarding the pet food website. I think it illustrates a learning issue for us: none of the doctors were involved with that link being posted, and therefore, it wasn't preapproved, as it were. So I read it after you read it! And, I agree with your comments. Therefore, I have taken the post down. It was meant in good faith, I'm certain, however, what happens is some of the staff will just randomly post links, and we arent' aware. That will change, effective immediately. I feel we are responsible for putting good info out there, and a website that actively recommends against homecooking (something that [Name Withheld] and I, in particular, are known to recommend!) is rather pointless. I will say that I am not opposed to commercial pet food, rather, it's a matter of tailoring the diet, in whichever form, to your pet's individual needs. Balanced perspective is, indeed, needed. Hopefully that meets your satisfaction.
(PS - love the pic of Rhys in your profile!)

These guys are awesome

:woohoo: That is SO AWESOME!!!!!! And look - it's not just THAT post! Now they'll put a process in place to make sure that stuff that goes up is stuff they DO endorse! That is FABULOUS for everyone! Total win-win! :bigthumb: :D :D :D

This is a great example of one person making a difference with an unexpected and far-reaching impact. This is why people should always say something - take a stand - when they see an issue that needs correcting.

Kudos to you, Andrya!

Andrya,   that is so cool that the vet agreed with you. Good for you for speaking up and drawing their attention to it.
