Hello all, I am new here. I just rescued a kitten. Long story but I happened to be checking the mail when I saw a boy and his mom yelling at each other. She told him to get rid of the kitten and she didn't care how he did it. Long story short he proceeded to over-handed throw the kitten over a 6 foot fence into a Walmart parking lot while the mother just watched. I was furious and made him go fetch it. She was covered in feces and severely malnourished. She was injured a bit on her face in the fall. She has one infected eye, (don't know if it is related to the fall or not), and her belly is pretty swollen. By looking at her teeth it looks like she is about 7 weeks old. I think she is very underweight. I have now had her for about a week and a half. When I first got her I bought her some kitten food and she didn't eat much. I added bottle feeding her kitten milk and she seemed to put on some weight however she had terrible diarrhea from it. Twenty four hours after I took her off of the kitten milk the diarrhea all but went away. I have been taking extremely good care of her as best I can. Anyway, here's the deal. Her eye is really infected, so much so that it oozes a yellowish liquid throughout the day. It is swollen shut most of the time. Her belly is very round and hard. We have no other pets and so had to go buy litter boxes and food and dishes and such to start. Also, I did some research online to find a good antibiotic eye medicine for her and I went to the store and bought it for $20. At this point I have spent a lot of money on her that I really didn't have. If I had more money I wouldn't mind but right now I am unemployed. I would love to keep her as I have fallen in love with her but I don't want to neglect her due to the fact that I can't afford to take her to the vet. I did go to the vet office to get an estimate on how much it would cost to take care of all of her issues. Just for shots, fecal tests and kitten package it is $250! Plus they looked at her eye and said that any treatment for that would be an extra $45 plus the cost of medication. Then the de-worming, spay, and flea treatment later, bringing the total to close to $400 in the next few weeks. There is no way I can come up with that amount. I have approximately $100 to spare for her right now. My husband can come up with another $50 but not for about 4 weeks. I don't know what to do. I don't want to take her to the pound or humane society because with this infection she is not adoptable and they will just euthanize her. She seems very healthy otherwise and has a good enjoyment of life. She plays like a kitten and is very beautiful girl. She is a great cat and I want to keep her but I just don't know what to do. I feel like I did the right thing rescuing her from the people who were abusing her but I just don't know if I really helped her that much. Any suggestions for me? Should I just let her go to the humane society. I really don't want to, but is that the more responsible thing to do?

Is there another vets office you can call? Over here worming tablet would just be given, no faecal test needed . She will need 2 sets of shots, and there are low cost spaying options all over the US. Plus the eye treatment and a flea  treatment. And microchipping, though that can wait until you have more $

What else is in the kitten package?

If you can't arrofd the vet care then it is more responsible to turn her over to a rescue group. For now the most important thing is getting her eye, fleas and worming done.

Well, I ended up calling 4 different vets. The prices were all similar. I just wonder out of all the things that she needs if some are more urgent than others. Like should we take care of the eye infection first, then the worms. If we could do this in steps we could probably afford it. We would just have to come up with about $50 every couple of weeks until it is all done. Honestly, if I could just get her through these few weeks we would be ok because after that we will have more money due to paying off our truck. That would free up some cash but that is not for another 6 weeks.
Plus the eye treatment and a flea  treatment.
The vet said she doesn't weigh enough yet for flea treatment but they did tell me to bathe her in Dawn dish soap which I have done 3 times. Mostly due to her being covered in poop from when I got her and the other two times from her getting diarrhea on her. I haven't seen any fleas on her since the 3rd bath. I picked a ton of them off of her with a flea comb.

Thank you for your quick response. I appreciate your honesty.

Eye, worms and fleas are all important.  Her eye could get damaged if the infection isn't treated, worms can damage her intestines and also prevent her growing well, and fleas can cause anaemia...

However it sounds like you *might* have the fleas under control.  Do remember that they will have been laying eggs that drop off into the environment - your house - and they tend to hop on, feed and hop off so there could be fleas lurking as well.  Time will tell.

Unfortunately a kitten in this sort of state can be quite expensive to sort out.  Do you have a no-kill shelter anywhere near you?  She may well bounce back quite quickly with the right treatment and soon be a very adoptable kitten.
