Anybody out there have insurance for their pet that covers pre-existing conditions that they can recommend??  I know it exists, but I don't know if it's any good.  My elderly cat's hyperthyroidism is getting to be stabilized, but the bills are getting to be a bit much in the meantime.  Is there any help out there for me?

Yes and no.... Yes you can get insurance, expensive.... Trupanion will be a company that will cover her - HOWEVER - they will not cover anything that is remotely related to her hyperthyroid.
And that is a pickle. A LOT can be related to hyper-T.

I was in the same situation with my Gracie :rbheart: and I researched a lot of companies.... I ended up not insuring her - it would not be worth it - it would basically cover accidents and some illnesses, but with her HT, I was in a huge risk of those illnesses not being covered.

No company will cover a pre-existing condition - not like HT. They might cover a condition that is deemed cured - there is no such a thing for HT, unless you treat it surgically or with Radiation.

So.... as I said.... yes and no.

I am a firm believer in insurance - I have it for all my cats - I encourage pet parents to get as soon as they get they kittens and pups. But in this case, I think you are better off without it. IMHO you truly are.

Insurers are in the business of making money, so there is no chance of them taking on an old cat with a chronic condition except (possibly) at an eye-watering premium.  In my view the best thing is to save into a separate account starting from you get a cat or kitten.  In the UK I feel £10 a month per cat is the minimum, and it needs to go up a bit each year.

Insurance for dogs is another matter in my view as (in the UK at least) it also provides 3rd party insurance for if you get a claim against you for damage your dog has done.

Hmm, so that means if my cat suddenly develops high blood pressure, and needs meds and subsequent blood tests, then that will not be covered?

That is correct, as that can be related to HT. Congestive heart failure - related to hyper-T. Kidney problems, can be related to Hyper-T. Liver problems - can be due to side effects from Hyper-T medications.

Think long and carefully about this one...... Because your vet will have a hard time proving that anything is not related to Hyper-T. This is a condition that can affect the cat's entire system...... which is why the majority of companies don't cover a hyper-T cat.

Oh, I see.  Clearly at this point, buying insurance is a waste of my money and time.  One last question, is there anyway for me to get prescription drug insurance at least??

Not if it is for anything related to Hyper-T. Again, you CAN get insurance. and that insurance will cover prescription for anything NOT related to Hyper-T.

Well.... That's because the kitty is already sick..... and that's not the time to get insurance :(

I do have insurance for all my cats - I got on the first day I got them. It has been wonderful - they have covered everything, and thank goodness I have it!
One way or another, 2 of my cats have chronic conditions - one of them has 2: Stomatitis and IBD; and the other has one: Resorptive Lesions. I never had a claim, a prescription, an exam, anything denied or given a hard time by my insurance. They pay me fast, and they pay fair.
To me, they have been great and a huge security blanket.

For Gracie :rbheart:, my HT kitty that I adopted as a senior already sick, I had no such luck - she already had that disease, and I had to swallow that cost. Had I gotten insurance, I would paid that cost on the top of her medical bills - everything she had was related to Hyper-T.
