I've never felt quite satisfied with my vet. Its not that they've never been kind or put in any effort, but I just didn't feel as happy with them as I should be. I think it mostly stemmed from their seeming disbelief in Grim's chronic ear infections. I know when he has them and how often he gets them. His ear will crinkle back just so and then he'll shake his head and I'll hear the familiar 'slosh slosh' of gunk bouncing around in there. And no matter how many times I tell them something is wrong, they never believe me. They look down his ears and say "clean as a whistle. Would you like to look?"

Well today was the last straw.
I dropped him off at around 7:30 with pick up at 4:30. They had me fill out some paperwork asking if I wanted pain management, pre-anesthesia bloodwork, etc. I made sure to check yes on everything including that he was already vaccinated. No other questions were asked of me.
They called me around noon to say his procedure was over and went well and reminded me pickup time was 4:30. I showed up about 15 minutes early but they were okay with it and gave me a room. The vet said everything went fine, no extractions needed and thanked me.
I went up to the front desk to pay and the receptionist handed me a paper with something attached to it. It was a rabies tag. They had vaccinated him without my permission!! :wife: I confronted the receptionist and she said they were just going by his schedule. I pointed out that not only had he already had his rabies done last year, but I had marked on the paperwork that he was good on his vaccinations. (At the bottom of every sheet, it specifically says rabies vaccines are good for 3 years and yet they gave him one after 1 year.) She kept trying to reassure me that everything was okay, but I told her I was very much Not okay.

They've gotten Grim's birthday wrong twice, my phone number on file has been wrong for a year, no one can remember how to pronounce his name, they can't find or can't remember tests that have already been done on him and now THIS?!? :argh: I'm DONE

I can't believe they did this.. I feel violated..

I'm so sorry!  I posted here how frustrated I was that they gave my Eko a convenia shot after his dental without consulting me.  An unnecessary vaccine would be even more upsetting.  Again, I'm so sorry and hope you find a fabulous vet if it is time to move on.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
And it's just the WORST when they try to make it better, rather than just saying "we're so sorry for the mistake." :wife:

Oh I hope you can find a WONDERFUL vet! :hugs:

I know you've been following my vet saga, I can only commiserate and hope you find a better one.  Last time I was in, clerk looked at paperwork and said, "oh, so now you're calling him Leaf?"    LEAF???  "Leaf" was the name originally given at the shelter to a different cat, and we have never used it at all, for anyone.

While the vets themselves may be very good, that's not enough if the administrative side is made up of people who are apparently responsible for indicating what procedures to perform but can't read.  or write.  or file.  or bill.  or use a tickler.   or enter data in a computer.  or find their cats with both hands and a flashlight.

I mean do they not double check before giving something?  And especially since he wasn't even due!  And without your permission!  I know where I take my pets, before they have a procedure, they have to be up to date on their vaccines anyways.  I would not have paid for it because that is wrong, very wrong.  I really hope you can find a better vet.  I think Angie's List has vet reviews listed...

Oh NO! So sorry you are having this problem Minka. :hugs: I have not been satisfied with my vet for a while as well. They are friendly, but it seems like whenever we are there they are just trying to shove us out the door! They overcharge us all the time (it was MUCH more expensive to have Cookie spayed there than what another vet quoted me afterwards!). The vet we were dealing with when Candy was sick (not the vet we usually have) was very grim and depressing, and she made me cry right there in the office. She basically told me that Candy had no hope! Then the vet we usually deal with comes around smiling, happy and acting optimistic and says "out of all the cancers she could have, I'm glad she has this one". WHAT? Grr. Two completely different people. It's like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde! I am currently searching for a new vet, as well.

:vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: that you find a good vet Minka! :hugs:

I completely know how you feel! I just had a similar experience a few weeks ago with my Kattie. I took her in to the cat only vet because she wasn't eating as much. He looks at her and notices her slightly larger belly (which is her normal shape) and thinks her abdomen is filled with fluid. He does a blind stick in the room and gets some brownish fluid that he said was pus or necrotic tissue but we later found out was stool. He said my cat had gi lymphoma and wouldn't live through October. He gave a steroid shot to reduce inflammation even though there was none. He also gave a covenia injection when I wanted oral antibiotics! Such a horrible experience! I went to my dogs vet and he basically said after her thorough work up that there is no cancer and her eating habits may be due to the fact that she is going blind, ( due to bad baytril reaction) she got scared because my other cat pounced on her while eating and so we feed them separately and in different spots. Problem solved. Except now she has a small lump where the covenia supposedly was given. This is going to be checked at her recheck. I'm hoping it is just inflammation and will go away as I'm deathly afraid of the possibility of VAS. We are watching it but I am so mad at that other vet. I wrote a huge negative review on yelp and other review sites. I'm thinking of contacting the bbb or the avma, but waiting for her recheck. So hope you find a better vet, it stinks when you can't trust your own vet to have your pets interests in mind!

Oh Minka I am so sorry to hear this :-( :-(. In the area of vets, don't even get me started :-(. I have finally found a good one (and am happy with Toby's oncologist) but it has taken me about 20 years and 5 vets before getting to this point. I hate to say this, but barring a true illness, I avoid taking my cats to the vet because of so many bad experiences :-(.

I agree with the other poster about reporting that vet to the the AVMA, the BBB, and the TVMA. Also I would put a report on YELP.com about that vet. They know full well not to just do a vaccine and that there are so many considerations- age, the procedure he had and related stress/lowered immunity, possible allergies.

It makes me so mad that some vets just go ahead without discussion and treat their clients like morons with moneybags.

When Toby had cancer the vet gave him shots of covenia for "bacteria" in his throat when in reality he had acid reflux from so much vomiting due to his sarcoma. And sadly that was the tip of the iceberg :-(.

I have had the same vet for 18 years and am very satisfied.  Now if I could find a competent doctor for me.

this is terrible!  I know that feeling you were describing.  I've got a fantastic vet so it wasn't about him but it was with a doctor (specialist) my primary care doctor referred me to.  Nothing major wrong but all kinds of "little" things that made me go hmmmm...  The final straw for me was when they put me in a room, administered the local anesthetic to remove a small cyst on my arm.  I waited 90 minutes in the room and finally went back out to the nurse's station only to find the doctor had forgotten about me and gone to lunch.  I won't bother to tell you the scene I caused over it.  I think The entire waiting room full of patients fled.

Well, at least you now know this is not the vet for you!  I'm grateful to have the vet I do.
