I just found out my 5 year old male cat has FLUTD according to the vet. We noticed a discharge, then blood, all in the same day. He also began vomiting which is very unusual.

We took him in last night and the vet claims he has FLUTD and prescribed Clavamox to clear up the infection (bacteria) and prescribed a prescription cat food for changing the PH of his pee to stop the crystals.

The vet seemed like a salesman to me, and I feel like I may have been "oversold" on what is actually wrong with my cat. Does he need the special cat food, and is the clavamox a good solution as an antibiotic for his bacteria they found in the urnialiysis?

They performed bloodwork and a kidney panel and said no other issues were found, besides him being a bit overweight.

They did give us an optional prescription for an anti-inflammatory, is this really optional or should I go ahead and pick it up tonight?

Any advice is appreciated, we are a low-income family so cost is a factor, but we want to do everything we can to ensure our cats health and well-being.

Thank You.

If the anti-inflammatory is Metacam (meloxicam) nope - do NOT give it, stay AWAY from it.
DO give a pain medication, Buprenex is a good one. I do not like Clavamox because of the side effects..... but many do use it..... If bacteria was found in the urine, yes, an antibiotic is necessary. I rather do Baytril. I will never do Clavamox again due to personal experience.... but then, that's me.

No, the prescription diet is not necessary - especially if he gave you a dry food. You want to give a 100% wet food - and add water to it. To keep the pH in check, turkey works well, grain free - again, WET. Ditch all the kibbles. Choose good canned food where you see plenty of meat as the first ingredients, and keep low carb, as carbs increases the pH. If you get a low carb canned turkey food, that's what you want..... And add water to the food so you keep the urine as dilute as possible :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Sad news, we had to put boots down last night. :( His bladder was about to rupture, and the vet wouldn't work with us on the $2500 surgery that they claimed would only provide temporary relief until he gets blocked up again. That was the toughest decision I ever made.
