Hi Everyone

So I talked to my vet and it turned out I had been way overfeeding Smokie & Bandit- and the vet has informed me to feed them the amount of their target weight (Smokie, 13 pounds and Bandit 11 Pounds).......... I was feeding them enough for their current weight, and was told that would only maintain current weight......

So I finally cut them down to the right amount for their target weight, and they are PO'd! They get fed 1/3 cup a day--- which is what the vet said to do, according to the bag instructions, for a 10% calorie reduction and weight loss........

So my problem is, Daily they are trying to open the cat food bucket (We keep a large trash can with a lid to put the food in) and use 1/3 cup measuring scoop every morning. They get fed once a day, that is what the vet said- and that is what we are doing.

I don't know if they are hungry, or just food addicts that know the food is there............ Anything I can do to make them not keep opening the trashcan lid??? I have heavy books on top right now, but my bigger concern is- Am I starving them, or are they just crying because they aren't getting their way.???

We feed Purina One, Indoor Formula

I know Purina has a bad reputation, we have never had any problems- it isn't the cheapest, but we can't afford high dollar food either.

Thanks for all input!!

I don't think that's enough calories. I believe for weight loss, recommended amount is 15 calories per pound. So for 11 pounds, that would be 165 calories, for 13 pounds, 195 calories. Purina ONE Indoor Advantage has 398 calories per cup. So 1/3 cup is only about 133 calories. On the bag, there's even a feeding recommendation for 10% calorie reduction, and it says 1/2 -2/3 cup for cats over 10 pounds (I would link to it but it keeps crashing my phone. I've had to type this 3 times now . But if you look up their website you can find it). I would give Bandit a bit less than 1/2 cup and Smokie exactly 1/2 cup. And I would split it into 2 feedings. . .I don't think anyone likes eating only once a day.

Did the vet know you're feeding the Indoor formula? He might have thought it was the higher-calorie kind.

I bet the vet thought you were feeding regular Purina one and not indoor. Give him a call and let him know whats goingon with the cats and about the indoor cat food.

I thought that, too, so I looked up the regular formula, and it has 450 kcals per cup, so 1/3 cup would only be 150, still not enough for either cat, even for weight loss. So now I don't know what the vet was thinking :dk:.
