Hi Everyone! On a -30C day in February, I spotted a brown and black tabby on my doorstep. He took off as soon as I opened the door. I spotted him 20 feet away in the bushes and he meowed in response to my hello's. He ate the food I put on the stairs as soon as I was gone. It has been 7 months now of twice a day feedings, numerous conversations and treats. If I don't make any sudden moves he has finally started to eat in my presence, as long as I stay a safe distance. The last few days he can be lured to within 3 feet of me with his special treats and patience. I make no moves to touch him, just happy he is slowly getting used to me. He will not be outdoors for another cold Manitoba winter! As soon as the local cat shelter has a trap available he will taken to the vet for shots and neutering, then he and I will begin our trust building journey. I have a gigantic dog kennel that will be placed in my sewing room. In it will be a smaller cat kennel for him, a litter box beside it and his food and water (as per advice from local shelter). Hopefully, with lots of time and patience, he will come to be happy indoors. It may take extra long in our household as we have 3 dogs (who like cats though). The sewing room will be off limits to them until some point way in the future. Someday I hope they will get along. I have lots of time and patience but if it is in the cat's best interest there will be a home for him once he is "tame" at my elderly neighbors (though I hope it won't come to that!)
I am apprehensive about the whole process. Terrified that he will never trust me after trapping him. I also secretly hope that he had owners at some point, though none came forward when I posted ads about a found kitty, and that once he settles inside he will remember that he was a house cat. I hope I am doing the right thing, as I've been told by some professionals that it would be better to TNR him (seriously in our winters?). I am encouraged though by all the success stories I have come across on this site. I'm glad I found this site and look forward to sharing our journey and benefiting from all your knowledge!
