Yeah I thought it was cute when he was smaller. Now he's over 12 lbs, so not as cute ;)

And just in case I don't notice him SITTING ON MY FACE, he'll then take his paw and cover up my mouth with it

Seriously, I think he's trying to get rid of me sometimes.

I think the whole cats taking a babies breath away started because cats always gravitate to warmth which is why the cat wants to get in the crib and snuggle with the baby.  Somewhere along the line a small baby probably died from crib death and the cat slept in the crib with the baby on a regular basis and 2 plus 2 equals 5.

as a UK resident i have heard of this "black cats are bad luck" thing, and i must admit i was quite surprised by it.

my first cat, that i still have "shelby" is pure black with the brightest lime green eyes, she is really something special.

this is the only pic i have of her on photobucket, so you will have to take my word for it on the eyes!

we then adopted little trio, our three legged little boy, he is just soooo cute and super active!

about a week after getting trio, our neighbour asked us if we could re-home anotehr black kitten, who was a very similar age to trio. he too was really cute, not so playfull, but really loved affection. we thought 3 was too much for us so we found him a new family who send us regular updates and just love him to bits!

are black cats bad luck? i dont think so, but they are gorgeous! (arnt they all though, no matter what colour?)

I don't think cats take people's breath away. That's silly. However, if I had a child I wouldn't let the cat sleep in the child's crib, simply becuase the child could put it's face in it's fur or something and suffocate. Or the cat could sit on its face.

And before you laugh, my cat sits on MY face in the morning to wake me up to feed him, and the cat I had when I was a kid once lay across my face when I was sleeping and I woke up because I couldn't breathe and realized I had a face full of cat lol.

I would only keep a cat and a baby separated though. A toddler and older child could sit up and move around and I wouldn't fear about that happening to them, just to a baby that couldn't move very well yet. That being said, it would be extremely rare for something like that to happen (and it has nothing to do with the cat's fur color). I'd feel the same way about a cuddly dog.

.. i truly needed a good laugh right about now. you have a very special kitty for sure.

Bella will wake up my daughter, sometimes..since she sleeps in my daughters bedroom..when she is hungry and nobody is awake yet.

Sassy just waits until i get up..then she meows and follows me everywhere until i open the fridge to get their food.

as for the cats and babies....

i have heard that the rumor was mainly started becuz cats SMELL the formula or milk on the babies mouth and would OBVIOUSLY want to taste it. therefore the cat would supposedly take the baby's breath while licking it's mouth. i can understand THAT.
but for a cat to just go to a baby and stick their face in the baby's face for no reason and take their breath?
that would be one SMART AND EVIL kitty.

i totally agree that i would not let any animal sleep with an infant. anything can happen....but NOT an animal PURPOSELY taking a humans breath.

I have a friend who works at a shelter. She told me generaly they put down the black cats they get. For they are the last ones people will adopt. Them and the tabbies.

I took the one my sister hated at her place. Ray doesn't have many teeth left after the battle of the kitchen counter was over from the husband... Yea I hate that guy!

Here is a picture of a survivior

I would have a herd of black cats if I was allowed to but alas blaine wont let me hahaha

I always wanted a black cat and I got him, Im also in the UK and I find that people are more scared of black cats than bringing bad luck, and What i had always heard growing up was if a black cat crossed your path it was good luck.

A few of my friends and my mam are scared of Sooty because of him being jet black with bright yellow eyes dont get that at all.hes the sweetest thing ever

a few weeks ago when my daughter and i were walking around the neighborhood, she asked me if a black cat crosses our path would it be bad luck?

uummmm...child.....WE HAVE BLACK CATS!
  they cross our paths EVERYDAY!

i have never been told it was good luck.
but i have heard something about them being good luck in some cultures. not sure if it is true. doesn't really matter to me tho. i still love em, just like any animal.

Oops! I forgot to say Ray was a girl.

My sister named her Raymond thinking she was a boy kitten

They shortened it to Ray when they took the cat in to the Vet have him neutered

I call her Ray Hun.

I let her enjoy her toys she hides. Jump on counters. She even eats baby food for I am sure that is what she was after at my sisters.

People are dumb enough to think cats are unsanitary. They never give it a thought that the cat think the same thing about them. Cats clean themselves more than people do.

Makes me mad too all the evil people who hurt cats and hates them.

that's cute. an animal will take any name it can get, in most cases.
they really don't have a choice sometimes.

i agree. cats are very smart too. yes....they deserve better sometimes.

it isn't fair, at all, how some people mistreat cats, just becuz they are not educated enough to appreciate them, like any other pet.

This morning I woke to Ray crying a distress call. I found her wedged between two book shelves. They are heavy.  Full of books and must I say it...yes, records. Well...I am old.

Anyway... I took some kind of he-man strength to empty the shelves so I can tip them over.

She was too weak to climb on the reclining shelves. So I had to drop them and grabbed her by her scruff. At least I could reach her, that made me happy.

I held her until the trembling stopped in her hind legs. She was squished. She may have been on them most of the night. I didn't get up until 3 am.

She didn't eat or drink until this afternoon.

That was the scariest thing I ever went through with one of the cats. I wasn't sure how to get her out of the situation. Trapped and she was meowing to get her out.

She was more confident that I could get her out of it than I was. Thank goodness I didn't let her down

OMG! i am glad to hear everything is okay.

how in the world did she get there? is it a space that she may have tried to get through and did not realize she was too big? or did it collapse on her somehow?

awww...don't ya just love that. how sweet for him to take to that name so quickly and so well. Bucky it is.

speaking of names.......

Sassy was not named Sassy when i got her. actually...that was her nickname. her actual name was Athena.
uuhhh..that name DOES NOT FIT her at all. the husband named/called her Athena..but the wife and daughter called her Sassy. she is definitely one that lives up to her name.

i actually tried calling her Athena and she would not answer. took a few days of calling her Sassy before she started answer to it. i think she may have been confused..beings that we had Bella too.

My kitten Thunder is black and white. We read on the internet that black and white cats are very smart. Thunder does crazy things. She has a very shiny black coat with a white under belly. Picture is in my photos.

There is a space of about three inches between the two bookcases. More then likely she jumped up on the top and slipped. Felling down in between them.

She has terrible balance. She will sit at her perch at the window and fall off suddenly

.She is good today

Took her a couple of days to became normal...well normal for her.

Oh okay. Silly girl. ;)
That must have been pretty traumatic for her. Glad to hear she is back to HER normal. :)

Some people still believe black cats are bad luck, I don't agree I have had 3 black cats. My first black we got while we were living in Germany back in 1984-87. We brought him back to the US with us. I got another black cat a yr. later so I had 2 black cats at the same time. both boys.  I had another black cat he was long hair.

this is Flip in 2009.

I just love black cats. Mine were very loving cats. I miss them.
