So Ara's babies are now 7.5 weeks old. Just a few minutes ago one of them pooped in the box but didn't bury it. My scooper is in the other room so I picked up the box to shake the litter to cover it and noticed that there was blood in it. The stool was for sure soft but not watery, and it didn't seem to be bright red. I went ahead and bagged it just in case I need to take them in tomorrow and in the bag it looks bright red.

Of course I'll call tomorrow but any thoughts on what it might be? They are scheduled to get dewormed/first shots on Monday. Other than a little poop on the foot from not burying (that's how I know the culprit) he's totally fine. Eating and drinking great and running around like a madman.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

I'm not sure about cats, but isn't blood in the stool a tar-like black color? Have you looked at his hind end? He may have ruptured an anal gland.

Tar like/black stool can indicate internal bleeding. Very serious.

Fresh red blood is usually not quite as serious.

Glad you are calling the vet though.

Yeah it's defiantly not black tar but a streak of bright red blood. I did check his behind and it looks totally normal- not red or inflamed at all.

They are foster kittens so of course I will call the shelter tomorrow and see what they say. If they want to see them I will take them. I just wanted to try and get an idea of what it could be so I could do some research and try and have an idea of what's going on.

I think parasites can cause blood in the stool. Let us know how things are going!

Sometimes it's just caused by the food they eat, usually from dry food

Yeah this is what I think is causing it. They are now free roaming the whole apartment and they get into the resident cat's food. It's an all life stages formula so it can't hurt them but I think he just has a sensitive tummy and it's affecting him more than the rest. The vet said to watch him and moved their appointment up to Sunday. But, he didn't think it was urgent because of his age and activity level.

I'll let you know what they say!
