I am fostering a cat family of 6 kittens. The kittens will be 9 weeks old day after tomorrow and two of them still aren't eating any solid food - they're still just nursing. Is this normal? What can I do to help? Or should I just give it more time?

I've tried just about everything - KMR in a dish, kitten chow soaked in KMR, all kinds of wet food. These two have no interest in it at all.

Have you tried putting wet food gently into their mouths? Or onto their paw so the lick it off (that has the risk of being flicked everywhere though lol). Are you certain they're not eating when you're not around? Still nursing is fine, and what they should be doing, but they also need more than just milk at this point.

Thanks for the reply. :)

I've tried putting wet food on their mouths and on them, they just act disgusted and leave it there until mama cleans them.

I'm pretty sure they're not eating dry food, and they're definitely not eating wet food. Neither seem to acknowledge dry food as being food, they just sniff it and either run away or try to bury it. They don't even want to try cat treats.

It just seems strange to me that they have no interest at this point.

This  trying  to bury it  is  in itself an  improvement,  It  is  a  sign  they  DO recogize it  as  food.  They maybe  dont want it now,  but  it is  to good to just  throw away, so  they  try  to bury  it  for  later  use.

So the despising scratching   is not  as  to  bury poo,  but  it is as to bury excess of food.

My  younger resident do often so. He  goes away   after this  despising scratching,  but  after  awhile  often comes  back and ates,  if  there  is nothing better offered. :)

Sometimes  even - AFTER  eating this something better, he nimbles some on the dry food too.

Good luck!

I was wondering if one of the kittens I fostered was eating solid food or not as I hadn't seen her doing so.  When I put some raw mince down it was obvious it wasn't her first time at the food bowl!  However she was younger than your kittens - about 6 weeks I think.

I take it the food is out where they can find it easily, and where they can see mum eating?

Have you tried raw mince?  Or cooked white fish fillets?  Or pieces of raw meat?  Sometimes you need to give them something unusual to see them feeding, or to get them to start feeding.
