Hi my cat mosby has been taking cisipride in pill form for about 6 or 7 months and he has lost so much weight. Mosby has become Avery picky eater, will no longer eat canned cat food of ant kind, he eats steak cooked rare and some times turns his nose up at that. Every article I read about mega colon states the cat needs a high fiber diet but I read your response and the mirilax and wellness core sounds great. Mosby has always loved hard cat food....going to give the wellness a try in wet and dry form.

I am thinking about stopping the cisipride as mosby has become very depressed, lost so much weight and won't eat. Hong the mirilax helps more then cisipride. What do you all think about me trying this...so frustrating for mosby and me, I feel so bad for him. Oh yeah, mosby is 14.

Any help or advice is welcomed.

Thank you

Please don't stop the cisapride without discussing it with your vet. Cisapride is not a medication that can just be stopped.

Cisapride is a motility agent, not a laxative or fiber. It works by stimulating the intestine to move and contract to keep everything moving the way it should. The intestines often loose elasticity with chronic constipation and years of grainy heavy dry food. This is why the cisapride is needed. A cat with megacolon often needs to be on cisapride and a laxative or fiber.

I may have misunderstood but it sounds like you are not feeding your cat a balanced diet. Cooked steak is not an adequate diet for a cat. Your cat should be eating a high quality low fiber grain free canned food.

If you have to sprinkle dry food over the canned to get him to eat it, do that. Gradually use less dry as he gets used to eating canned.

Weight loss is also a reason to bring your kitty back to the vet. I recommend you get some blood work done, there may be something else going on now.

Please, don't stop the cisapride on your own.

Thanks Otto for your help.  Mosby will not eat any canned cat food any longer, he turns his nose up at it so I have started cooking him steak and chicken which he will eat but not all the time. To get him on a balanced diet I'm going to change his food to the wellness core no grain food and their canned food. I give Mosby Miralax daily and I say thank god for that, it helps keep his stool soft.

I will not discontinue the cisapride and will bring him to the vet to see if there is another problem.  However, Mosby is very much in a daze when he is on cisapride, I give him .05 daily in a pill pocket which he loves. I'm going to give him cisapride at night rather then in the morning I think it will work better for him. My Pharmacist called and told me he can no longer get cisapride because it has been taken off the market for animals too, it was taken off the marker for humans about 7 years ago he told me, my vet said she has a resource for cisapride for a while.......HELP  what else is their for our Megacolon kitty kids!

Hi Kattiekitty,

What is petromalt? Is that a replacement for cisapride?  Cisapride has been taken off the market completely for our cats and dogs, hoping Petromalt is a replacement.

I'm so depressed for my cay Mosby, he no longer cuddles like he used to or begs to be brushed, propped up on my shoulder etc. due to megacolon. He was so over weight but now is so skinny and I think to skinny.  Going to the vet soon, Otto is making sure Mosby is getting the help he needs.

I love this site...thanks for the help

Petromalt is a hair ball remedy. It is not a good aid for mega colon or constipation, no hair ball remedy is. And, since it has been reformulated, the first ingredient is CORN SYRUP. Don't give this to your cat.

Please, call your vet and ask about what you can do to replace the cisapride. Ask about tapering the cisapride, before you run out completely. This medication should not be stopped suddenly, I can't stress that enough. If cisapride has been taken off the market for animals too, your vet is the best place to turn for alternatives. Keep on with the miralax and don't give up on trying to get your kitty to eat canned food.

Also discuss with your vet the weight loss. I do urge you to bring your cat in for a check up. Have blood work done, and write down all your questions so you don't forget any.

Stop feeding him cooked people food, it is not good for him. Feed the canned with kibble sprinkled on top and mixed in, gradually adding less kibble. Do not leave kibble down (no free feeding), feed scheduled meals, three times a day.

Brought Mosby to the vet this am at 10:30, he is now being put under to be evacuated and we are increasing the cisapride to 3 times a day and going to get mosby on a balanced diet. He had a blood panel done and all came out good except the thyroid which is being sent out for more extensive testiing.

I pray he makes it through this just fine and we can get his megancolon under control with cisapride and miralax.

I'll knowmore when we go pick mosby up this afternoon.

Thanks so much for your help and the push i needed to take Mosby to the vet. So happy to have found this place........it really helped me to get my mosby to the vet fast! Thank you thank you thank you

Thanks for letting us know. So his bowels were impacted? No wonder he wasn't eating! He'll be feeling much better now. I'll be watching for further news.

My,
, are as follows. But, keep in mind, these, are just based off my personal experiences. I would recommend, wet/canned food. Then, add, as much water, as, you possibly can, with, the cat eating it. I fed my cat, at the time, 3oz of food, mixed with, 2-3oz of water. He had to lick/drink it up. But, that worked wonders.

Thanks for the update. I know how lonely it can be when your kitty is in the hospital. Were you able to visit Mosby?

What did the vet say about the cisapride being discontinued? Is that true or was the pharmacist wrong?

and some good canned cat food that dose notmake a lot of fecal matter.
What brand makes that claim? The thing is, the better the food, and the less needless junk, the less poop. This means no grains, no fruits and no vegetables.

My advice is to start with the kibble topping the canned food to get him interested in eating it. gradually start crushing the kibble instead of putting whole ones on. Then gradually stop even adding the crumbs.

We went and visited Mosby today and he still has not passed any stool after increased cisapride, miralax, lactose and two enamea*. The Vet is trying another med to see if it will make him go and if he does not poop today or tonight he will be put under and they will extract it manually, hoping to get it all out. They hard part is if they don't get it all out they are worried his colon has just stopped working altogether. I do not want surgery for Mosby because mega colon could return. Mosby is a very healthy cat other then mega colon and he is 14.

We are going to change to wellness core no grain dry food and wellness no grain canned food, mostly protein and makes less fecal matter.

What is kibble? Kibble and bits? I would do that to help him eat his new balanced diet if he makes it through this. Pray he does please. His brother Jeb misses him terribly and so do I. I sharemy pillow with Mosby every night and last night and tonight will be hard.

Yes, cisapride has been taken off the market. It was confirmed through our vet. Now what! I asked and they do not know, so I will go to the pharmist to see what they offer for a replacement?

Mosby is coming home in an hour to see if he will have a bowel movement in the comfort of his home. Let's hope he does because if not we bring him back tomorrow morning to have him put under and they will manually extract the stool. The good thing, Mosby is in great spirits and showing no signs of discomfort and eating a little bit. Bye is worth every cent this is going to cost us! His brother Jeb misses him but I see hissing and growling in Mosby future because of the vet hospital scents on Mosby. I can't wait to get Mosby home and let him roam where he wants too.

Good luck with your baby Mosby! How is he doing? It is so sad When they have to have enemas, especially getting put under anesthesia. My baby had to do this 3 times so far.. Its not the same without sleeping with them :). I'm curious, I read that you mentioned cisparide has been taken off the market. What state do you live in? I just picked up a bottle on Monday. I haven't put my baby on it yet, as I want to see how he does without it first, but I heard that stopping a medicine can be harmful for them. I wonder if certain companies still sell cisparide to certain vets. I dont want to start him on it if they are pulling it from the market... It makes me even more nervous that it has so many severe side effects.

I live in NC. Our pharmacist told our vet that cisapride has been taken off the market for animals and it was taken off the market for humans 7years ago. Our vet can still get it because they found another pharmacy that had some but they do not know how much they have. Talk with your pharmacist about what would be a replacement for cisapride. Pharmacists know so much more about medications.

Mosby is doing better. I really thought we were going to lose him last Saturday but he was just so exhausted from the three enemas and being stressed in a charge cage for three days at the vet. He is on instinct and EVO soft no grain cat food...it is mostly all meat. He loves the chicken, lamb and turkey. I have the dry EVO for when we go away but don't see that happening for a long while, at least until mosby is better with his stools and gains some weight back.

Try your cat on EVO wet and start the cisapride along with Lacutose and miralax. Mosby is on all that cis twice a day, lact twice a day an miralax twice a day quarter tsp each time. I also cook him frozen fish filets and he loves it. Good luck with you cat and I hope it all works out for you. Please don't hesitate to ask any thing on here, everyone is so great and I just started a little while ago on this site.
