Hi, about 3-4 weeks ago we adopted a stray cat, took her to the vets today and found out she's pregnant! And very far gone! Only trouble is we don't know how far gone she is and have read about on various websites but all offer different views. She eats a lot and has already found a nest, she's still moving about but tends to be in either her nest or our chair, she just settles in either and sleeps or lies there. Her tummy is quite swollen (babies are moving fine, can defiantly feel at least 2-3) and her nipples have lost the hair round them and are also quite swollen and very pink... My question is how far away is she from birth?

sounds like she is anywhere from a week to just a couple days away from birthing

Agreed she sounds very close. Once you can feel the babies moving you are usually within 2 weeks of labor. But, no one can give you a more accurate guess than that. Since you don't know when she mated, welcome to what we all call "the waiting game!"

Now is the time to start keeping a close eye on her, and have your birthing kit all ready in case you need to intervene. I would also line that chair with a couple of layers of towels in case she decides to have them there so as not to ruin your furniture!

Good luck and keep us posted! Ask more questions if you need to and welcome to TCS!

Ooh yes by the way, after I posted this we checked down there and it looks like dry blood, my mom said that looks like she's had her show, does that narrow it down some?

So she's started pacing about and being very affectionate, however she's very very protective of her belly!! She's stopped eating so much, shes licking her back and her downstairs... so I'm starting to think she might give birth soon, am I right in thinking that?

Sounds a bit like what my cat's starting to to do, she hasn't wanted me to touch her belly for the last couple days, and she's been licking alot but otherwise pffft, I'm getting anxious, the blasted dreams of her having kittens aren't helping xD

the pacing is usually a pretty good sign that she's getting ready to go very soon could be within a few hours, or could still have a couple days, she could be feeling the mild contractions and she's uncomfortable, good luck!, the waiting is deffinately the hardest part, especially the last few weeks, I know I'm being driven up the wall with waiting lol.

Same! I only found out about her being pregnant about 5 days ago and been wishing shed drop now! But because she's a stray (she's only under a year herself!) we don't know how far exactly she is so it deffinatly is the waiting game for us! Problem is we're going away next week and I'm really hoping she gives birth before hand so I know there's no complications (my friend is going to take care of her) but aswell I really want to see the kittens safe before I go! :) I've noticed she's breathing only slightly more but I haven't heard anything vocal and she's not looked in distress at all, but I'm hoping your right about the pacing, I'm hoping it'll be within the next few days! :) hope your kittes arrive safe too! :)

Because she is so young make sure you do everything you can to be present for the birth. It was a trend this summer of the board that a lot of people had young strays/fosters (including myself) and all had difficult labors. A good article to read is: http://www.fabcats.org/breeders/infosheets/breeding_from_your_cat/felineparturition.html - it does a nice job outlining some of the complications that can happen. Also, I wrote a thread after my foster had her difficult labor that may be helpful. http://www.thecatsite.com/t/247353/aras-babies-a-story-about-preparedness . The part I liked is not what I wrote, but when others chimed in about what is in their birthing boxes. It makes for a nice checklist to make sure you are all prepared!

Good luck and I hope they come soon!

Thank you, shall deffinatly read these today, yes I've taken a week off work so I can be here, I'm hoping it will be today as my mom has said she looks ready, she won't stop pacing unless she's by someone and occanisionally licks herself all round, her tummy has fully dropped as you can feel the kittens at the very bottom of her belly, so I hope it's today :) thanks :)

Is she drinking cows' milk? Many cats are lactose intolerant and it will upset their stomachs, not something you want when she is about to give birth. Give her KMR (kitten milk obtainable at vets or petstores) or goat milk, and keep some for the kittens too.

No, we've bought her kitten milk from a pet shop as she's only under a year herself, wouldn't give her cows milk as I read about that before hand.
