This is a recent thing, since I cut his food back to bring him back to ideal weight...though he was shuning EVO for a couple of weeks now.....he won't touch his food if it isn't some kind of fish...whitefish,salmon,tuna doesn't matter as long as it's not beef chicken or turkey. I can't afford to spring for lamb and venison so I don't know what he'd do with those....He'll eat friskie beef though...odd?

Look at the label... Friskies beef has fish in it. It's probably the 4th ingredient listed if I remember.

I feed my cats Friskies (Pate style only) as I can't really afford EVO or Wellness. They seem to do really well on it, and they love it.

If you look closely, most of the Friskies have fish in them.  My local WalMart only has three varieties of pate that don't have fish listed as the third or fourth ingredient.

friskies beef has fish as  an ingredient but not the main ingredient....maybe that's the way to avoid him eating only fish then? he did well on friskies, when i first gave him wet, then choked on it once and I took him off it because I was scared......but i can't always get to the better pet stores, or spare the money for the better food, so i gave him 2 cans this week of grocery store level food in among his better brands. As long as he tolerates it ok i figure no big deal...his sensitive  gi tract will tell me if the food's too cheap lol

I realize most if not all of the pate' style contain fish. I never feed them any of the "fish titles" so they aren't getting that much. I also don't feed the shredded or filet types b/c they all contain wheat gluten. Pate' style does not. One of my kitty's stomach does not agree with gluten.

matt can't digest corngluten, which is why so many of his options have been in the fiish flavours....I never found corn in the fish foods....but I was also only feeding ti about3times a week before he started shunning the other favors.....if he's on a diet already, can he really afford to be skippng meals? i open a can in the morning and that's his food for the day....so if he shuns the flavor i pull it

I understand where you are coming from. My cat was 22lbs when i started him on his diet. *HE* couldn't afford to go without food. However, even the most overweight cat can safely go 12 hours without food. And as tempting as it is to yank every food he doesn't like, IMO you just can't do that. :nono:
Every time you yank a food, you fuel pickiness. You fuel frustration for yourself. Like I said, I was there. One day Grim wouldnt eat a food that he always had loved. Then he wouldn't eat new foods I put down.I made this whole crazy list of foods he did or didn't or *maybe* liked. It was rediculous. But i realized what I was doing and stopped it. I put down the food I wanted him to eat and walked away and that was that. Now he'll eat *anything* I put in his dish.
Cats don't have a predisposition for pickiness, only a reputation.

well then given that the only foods that he's outright refused were the ones with duck in them, i'll just keep buying what I like and make him lump it lol. maybe hes just sore about losing his dry food and having his wet cut back to 3x daily instead of whenever he asks for it?

Could be! Tell Matt to hang in there. :lol3: Keep buying the flavors you have and hopefully, hopefully (fingers crossed) he'll finally give in and eat them!

(bold for emphasis)

Ah! See! He's used to getting his way! ;)
Gotta be strong and make him lump it. Only if he doesn't eat *anything* for 12 hours then give he some of what he likes. And then back to the grind! Gotta be strong for him for his own good!:nod::nod:

It's easy to SAY lump it. But my finicky cats act like total pains in the rear the whole time they are lumping it. They both act out and attack the furniture or carpet. They don't do this when they get their way. Aren't cats fun?

like furry kids LOL with big round begging eyes and not nearly as easy to ignore, since they don't say BUT MoOOOOOOoooooom when you tell them no
.....just come running to the kitchen Every time you go to it, and get underfoot, so you think even a big 14lb cat is a pain in the rear lol......and he can reach the counter too, so I have to worry about him knocking things off. i love my trouble maker though.........he's a hoot, especially last night when he tried to get me to climb in the  cupboard and hunt mice with him(i caught the last mouse in the house so I guess that makes me qualified HAHAHAHA!)

Oh, of course :lol3:
I weeded out the pickiness, but now Grim has decided he's hungry 24/7 so he's underfoot and meowing during the day and bouncing on the bed and whisker tickling my face at night. But I still know I have to let him lump it because if I get up and feed him, it just reinforces the behavior and makes it worse for me later.

Oh gosh, Grim is a big 'stuff knocker over'. I have to put lint roller 'sticky traps' on the furniture to prevent everything from ending up on the floor during hte night.:lol3:

i let matt wake me once for a feeding, then feed him locked in the basement.......this compromise after months on end of having him wake us up for attention by meowing from one end of the house to the other till i get mad and lock him downstairs and we all started the day dead tired. about a week before school started I decided to try putting his first feeding downstairs and he quickly figured out it was much more profitable to wake me up than it was to wake up the kids. So when he wakes me i take him and his breakfast to the basement and lock the door on my way up..............peace and quiet for all
