I always seem to have things happen at the worst possible time lately. I got a call today about a kitten that is kinda feral from what she was saying that had been laying in the same spot all day and she thought it was hurt or poisoned. So I went out to see the kitten and what I could do. There was this little light orange tabby laying in the dog house on the property I didn't examine him to much there because she was afraid he was going to run but I easily reached in scruffed him and put him in my carrier. He didn't fight one bit for being feral like she said. I got him home and took him out to see what the problem was and discovered he has a deep puncture wound on his butt. When I put him down to see if he can walk he was not putting any pressure on the back leg opposite of the puncture wound. The vets were of course closed at this time and I am pretty much broke so the emergency vet was just not possible. But I did speak to a vet and she told me to clean it up, keep him confined and comfortable for the night and she would look at him for me in the morning. I have antibiotics and a few doses of pain meds that were left over from spay surgeries, so he is started on that. Hopefully his leg is not broken like I fear, and he can easily be fixed up.

Sadly the kittens injuries were greater than I thought. Although he was quite and layed alert in his crate last night, he was crying and unable to lay still this morning, he was no longer walking but more throwing his body around. Over night he had taken a turn for the worst, his gums had turned pale and his paws were cold. I had arranged to get him to the vet to be euthanized instead and he died suddenly before I could get him there. I feel terrible having kept him over night, when I talked to the vet he didn't look like he was in danger of dying like that. I guess he was just doing a good job of hiding just how bad his injuries really were until it was the end. Rest in peace sweet little kitten, at least you didn't have to die alone.:rbheart:

Thank you. I know there was not more that I could have done for him. I just wish I had know how bad he was last night so I could have let him go then. He did at least have pain meds in him so hopefully that helped lessen his pain. It was buprenorphine that was actually prescribed for Delilah now that I look at the bag again, and I had clindamycine so the antibiotic was good for the puncture wound. He got sub-q just a little because he was slightly dehydrated. So I know I did everything I could for him at the time for what I knew was wrong. He was wrapped in a blanket being held and soothed when he passed. I am thankful that my vet has been helping me build up a little medical kit, so I at least had thoose supplies on me. I'm glad he didn't die alone in that dog house without anything I was at least able to give him. He also had someone who cared to try and comfort him in the end. I'm sad that he passed but he did at least get some love and care. There are always going to be losses like that, it just comes along with rescueing, its the ones who can be saved that make it worth while. I just always have to try to remember that when I do loose one. This is the third kitten that has been this badly injured in the last few months. The other two were very obviously suffering and had much worse and obvious injuries. It was obvious they needed to be euthanized and I was happy to allow them to pass and end their suffering.

Aw sweetie... :hugs: You brought a tear to my eye. You know when we rescue babies and they find their way into our lives to get help, sometimes that help IS to get them to the bridge :rbheart: in a peaceful, loving way. You are their stepping stone from this life to the next and a comfort to them during their last hours on this earth. :sobbing: I am sorry about what you have to go through.... but bless your heart for what you do. :heart3: :hugs: :heart3: :hugs:
