Hi all.

My 7 yr old gray hair has been on Prednisolone for quite a while for itchy skin and I just recently have been given Atopica for her possible environmental allergy.  They recommended either squirt it in her food or give it to her directly.

Well she won't eat the food if this has been sprinkled on, so I have tried just squirting it in her mouth.   It seems like it must taste terrible because she won't swallow her saliva for a time after I administer it to her. She'll walk around the room with drool running down the side of her face, and she'll look at me like I've tried to poison her.

I basically just shoot it in her mouth.  But perhaps there is a better way to do this?  Anyone with any experience administering horrible tasting liquid medicine?

Help

Is there a way it can be compounded into a tuna flavor?  Most prescription meds can be.  See if you have a compounding pharmacy in your town,  Even Walgreens does it for pets (or so they told me)  Otherwise, can you get this med in pill form?  If so, that might be easier to give her.

yeah. she takes pills really well. it just depends on my skill. Its all in how centered I get it down the back of her tongue.   I think they do make it in a pill form.  I could ask when I take her for her monthly checkup.

I never knew about compounding.  I think there's a few stores around the Pittsburgh metro area that may do this.  I'll have to call around.

In the meanwhile I read somewhere if you shoot it into the side of the cheek instead of down the front of the mouth, it may not be as sour to her.  I tried that and then picked her up with one hand under her armpits.  When I did that her back legs swung forward and she made a swallowing motion with her tongue.  So I did again and she did the swallow thing again.

I don't know if it was coincidence or if I actually discovered a new technique.  :)  i will try that again tomorrow to see how it goes.

My cat was on atopica for 3 or 4 months, but that was when it only came in capsules for dogs.  It didn't help LUcas because his problems weren't allergies, it was anxiety.  But he could take the capsules very well,  he can't take liquids because he will start foaming and spitting it out.  i really have no avice to give, I've been there, in fact since LUcas is on prozac, we tried giving him the liquid and we had to go back to the pills.  I'm cutting them in 8 pieces right now.

I have the same problem with Benadryl. Smokie does pills great, except for benadryl-- and the liquid, it's foam and vomit....... sigh.. Wish I could help and had a magic fix. He used to take Meloxicam and he loved the taste for whatever reason..... the vet said they mixed it with creamer. They also mixed the tramadol with creamer....

His Tramadol is extremely bitter, and it is the same thing as the benadryl....... foaming & vomiting most of the time (though not always....). He takes his baby aspirin with no problems (it has a slight cherry flavor...)

So any advice would be welcome here too!!!

If it helps at all, I have had the MOST luck when i use the tactic we used at daycare... plug their nose and they will then take a gasp of air and open their mouth AKA swallowing the medication........... and also wrap kitty in a towel, that will help too...... I think,...

I tried the stuff in this video, it helped a bit.....

I have been giving Mia and Mac liguid meds daily for the last 12 days to treat giardia. Its nasty stuff. I watched the vet give it and some of it was spit out by the cats and they foamed at the mouth. It was all down their faces. The first 2 times I gave itto them it was a battle. Mac even bit me (not his charactert). I finally decided to try holding them tightly between the neck and their head and bringing their head back towrd me. They have no choice but to open their mouth and I squirt it quickly down the back of the throat and hold them like that until they swallow. No more foaming at the mouth or spitting out. Doesnt sound pleasant but they dont seem to mind it much and they never run from me or try to fight me anymore.  :)
