You definitely want to use a non-clumping litter for the kitten. It's also best to use non-clumping for mama cat while baby is being trained. For some reason kittens seem to think it's okay to use the big-cat boxes instead of the little ones you put out for them. :nono:
so the litter I got is ok for them. My kitten is 8 days old.

HarleyDiva, your cats are such characters!

I feel fortunate that Aria will use pine pellets because I love that litter. She was pretty suspicious of it but adapted quickly.
LOL.....yes they are!  They were actually very tolerant of my trying all different kinds of litter.....but they wouldn't do the pellets.  I've pretty much settled on corn litter.....either World Best or Arm & Hammer.....whichever is on sale.  I bought them more expensive, covered litter boxes......but they prefer the plain old open tubs.  I had to take the tops of the covered ones.  Nico is OCD...lol.  One of the boxes in in a bathtub we don't use.  He uses the box....covers it with litter.....then scrapes down the sides of the litter box....gets out and scrapes down the sides of the bathtub.  It is quite a process to watch.  Another box is next to the toilet.  Gideon, the crazy Siamese, runs to the bathroom, jumps in the box, and pees when I do.

I used to love Feline Pine pellets. Pellets are great because they hardly track. I'd maybe get anywhere from 4-10 on the floor as Angel got out. what ever stuck between or to his toes.

After having Cystitis a few times, we have to stick with clumping, so I can monitor clump sizes. The Feline Pine was very expensive though, even the clumping. I had to switch. I didn't like he clay ones because they seemed to cause so much dust! I have settled on Pro-Pet Fresh Results. It's all natural corncob litter w/ natural pine scent. It's only 5.98 for a 10l bag at Walmart. (lavender & blue bag).

I use Scoopaway, 40lb bag, from cosco at 12$. Per bag. It clumps ok and has odor control. With three cats its working well but it is kinda dusty
Where do you find Odorbuster brand, thought I may try it or maybe Special kitty ( is that the corn type)?

I accidentally bought the scented cat litter... oh my word... I'm dying here.  The smell is so artificial and overbearing and after the cats use it, they smell like perfume.  Blech.  I'm too cheap not to use it, though.

Oh yeah, also got some inexpensive activated carbon online meant for fish tank filters and have been putting the pellets into the litter boxes.  I had to poke around for a deal because it can be pretty expensive.  Cuts down odours like a charm.  I love it.  It's basically the same as the Fresh Step (I think that's the brand?) that advertises the carbon in it, but you can just add it to whatever litter you prefer and it costs less.  I add it to my wood pellet litter; it's in pellet form so it works with my special litter boxes designed for wood pellets.

I have tried just about every litter on the market (clumping kind).  My cats will use almost anything, it's me that has the problem.  Most of the scented one I seem to be allergic to and all of them are pretty dusty and track a lot.  Right now I am using Dr. Elsey Ultra and Cat Attract.  They are not as dusty but they do track a lot probably due to the small size.

As soon as I need to change my litter I am going to but tidy cats in. I have enough of my old litter to litter train my kitten when he gets old enough. Once he starts using the big I'm switching to multy cat litter have it here already.

I just starting using Blue Naturally Fresh Multi-Cat Clumping Cat Litter and its awesome! No more smelly litter!! Yay!!
That's what I'm using and I love it. Just make sure you get the multi-cat variety. I accidentally picked up a bag of their regular litter one time. It's much finer grained which makes it dusty. The multi-cat grains drop off kitties' feet as soon as they hop out of the box. The regular tracks a long way and since it's dark brown it's pretty visible.

years ago i used fresh step for my 3-4 cats with two litter boxes for my indoor cats. then changed to luvs litter, which seemed expensive.  then came feline pine which i loved and the cats did too. then i found exquisite cat at pet smart which is the best pine litter that i have found. down to one cat now but was still a fan with three cats.

I had been using Jonny Cat complete.  I'm cheap, and Big Lots was carrying it for either $3.00 or $3.25 for a 20-pound bag.  Didn't do much to control odor, though.

I just bought some Fresh Step, and it seems much better at controlling odor.

We'll be moving soon, so I will have a 6- to 7-hour car trip with all 6 cats in cages in the car.

I was thinking about changing over to zeolite cat litter; but the reviews for that on Amazon.com are mixed.

The cats seem to be using Fresh Step okay, and the apartment smells much better.

, Somewhere I read that some folks were getting pine pellets from tractor supply stores for a low price.  I want to keep the cats happy, but don't have unlimited time or money to spend on them. So... I might look for a tractor supply store after we move to Arizona in 2-1/2 weeks or so.  In the meantime, I'll prolly be using temporarily disposable litter boxes with either Fresh Step or another, similar litter.  I returned 4 bags of Jonny Cat for a refund.

Well, although I think you were being snarky here, I did go to PetSmart and get some ExquisiteCat clumping litter.  It smells good, the cats are using it, and it's a few dollars less.  So yes, thank you for the advice.  When we get moved, I will contact PetSmart and see about a possible quantity discount on the stuff. BTW, I think Fresh Step is fine, just a bit expensive, and the smell, although good, is a bit strong.  But it does control odor!

When you consider the fact that clumping litter needs to be frequently gone through and the clumps removed and more fresh litter added, I don't see that it cuts down on the work of handling litter boxes at all.  But at least it does control odor berter.

i'm sorry but i can't tell whose response you view as "snarky" i sure hope it wasn't mine since i can find no offense there.  btw, i meant that the exquisite cat litter from petsmart was of the pine pellet variety, not clay or clumping. if you misunderstood me than accept my apologies. what does snarky mean in todays world? it has been getting a lot of use lately.

I thought you were being kind of sarcastic and putting me down with your reply.  If I am reading it wrong, then please accept my apology, for I misread your intent.  It turns out that it was good advice after all.  I got ExquisiCat clumping litter and it was a few dollars less per carton, and the scent is less strong than the Fresh Step.

I will get some more of it with my upcoming paycheck, and then more when I arrive in Kingman, Arizona.  I will see if they will cut me a deal if I buy in quantity.  I will need to get a separate garbage can or pail to put the clumps in.  I don't think using clumping litter is any less work than the other kind, but it sure controls odor a lot better.  I am always happy to be asked to pay less for something I really need.

I have bought 6 disposable litter trays, which I will take with me and set up as soon as I get to the Kingman house.  Will also set up their water drinkers and food bowls.  It's a bigger house.

apology accepted and i was never never being rude or impudent.  i hate paying for something that turns to s--t and has to be discarded, and loved it when i discovered pine litter..smells pretty good the whole time and doesn't track like the clay kind...that will be some trip but i wish you all the best with the kitties...

Thank you for your good wishes and kind words.  I was wondering about the pine pellets.  I don't know if my cats will accept those or not, never tried.  But the idea of the pine smell is a welcome one.
