Hi my nearly 14 year old tabby has been yowling after light out at night. She doesn't do it every night, in fact she sometimes goes for bout a month then she'll do  it again. It's very annoying and aside from yelling at her to shutup, I don't know what to do with her.

When did this behavior start? When was her last check up? Is she an indoor only cat?

Instead of being annoyed and yelling at her, why not check on her? She may be upset about something. Maybe there is an intruder cat or rodent outside? If this is a recent behavior, she could be ill.

Hi thanks for that. Both my cats have spent probably the last 8 years indoors.

Kimberly (the cat in question) started yowling sometime late last year.  I took her to the vet in May because her eyes were kind of shadowy. We got around that problem with some ointment and her eyes are fine now, so I know it isn't her sight the reason for her yowling. I've recently started calling out to her and putting the light on. I'm thinking now it could be just a sign of dementia. She eventually settles down then.

Yowling at night can be a symptom of hyperthyroid or high blood pressure. Both are easily treated with medication. Please take your senior kitty to the vet and have blood work done and her blood pressure checked. When doing the senior blood profile specify the t-4 thyroid tests be done.

I took her to the vet in May and the hyperthyroid test did come back normal. I'm not sure if frequent checks are required or not.

I think her sight is actually ok. They look normal. However I do notice the irises are quite big in comparison to my younger cat. We did have a vet check in May in regards to her sight and it was treated with ointment. Maybe she's due for another check up. Not sure how often I need to take her to the vet in her senior years.

It is recommended for a senior cat, visits to the vet should be done every 6 months.
