So I have shared in some other posts but tonight I think I need my own. My Mom was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer 11 months ago. She is only 59, very active, healthy, and never smoked. We did 10 brain radiation treatments right off the bat (because her brain tumors were the most concerning) and then she took a targeted chemo pill for 9 months.

At the beginning of August her scans showed that the cancer had spread significantly, mostly in her bones and kidneys. So, we started traditional IV chemo with three medications. So far we have done two rounds. Today, we did her scans and tomorrow we will do round 3 and find out if the new treatment is working or not.

Ironically, in April my Uncle was diagnosed with the same kind of cancer and pursued a similar course of treatment. He has been going downhill and today fainted when a bunch of clots ruptured. He's in the ICU and they think he has 24-48 hours left (although I never listen to doctor's time frames. Nothing can calculate the human spirit). But, he is older than my Mom and has said he is ready to go- he said he is ready to see his parents, his siblings, and his son. As of now I am wishing for him to have a peaceful and pain free passing.

So, I just can't sleep, worrying about my Mom, worrying about my Uncle. It scares me how quickly he took a turn for the worse and that it can happen to my Mom. I try not to worry because all we can do is enjoy everyday that we get but tonight it's getting the better of me.

I guess my request is please send good vibes our way for positive scan results tomorrow. And, please send good vibes to my Uncle as he prepares to leave this world and go on to whatever is next. I love you, Uncle Sam.

I'm so sorry, what you are going through is SO tough, it's a double-whammy. All you can do is stay positive for your mom and uncle and try to take care of yourself, you can't help them if your health is suffering. Stress like that can take a real toll so please eat good foods if you can and do whatever it takes (vitamins, yoga, whatever) to get through this horrible time.

Sending LOTS of vibes! Please keep us posted.

Thank you everyone it is really helpful and reassuring to hear encouraging words.

The scans looked really good. The tumors are the same size but are less dense. I'm not a doctor but in my mind that sort of sounds like they are shrinking from the inside out which is amazing. We didn't get the full pathology report but that will give a better picture. The doctor thought two more cycles of chemo and then she could go into "maintenance" mode. I love that possibility!!!!

Last I heard this afternoon Uncle Sam's condition was about the same. All of his out of town children are there with him, as is his wife, and they are all enjoying their time together. He says he is ready to go but doesn't want to go without his bride. They have been married 60+ years so that pretty much makes my heart break. This may sound terrible but I am so wanting a "The Notebook" ending!

Thank you for all your good thoughts for my Mom today. And, thank you for continuing to wish my Uncle a peaceful passing or speedy recovery, whichever way he decides he wants to play it.
