My car is 15 years old. Many years ago, I had a power steering belt break while driving. When I tried to turn a corner, the sterring wheel locked up part way through the turn. I had to put the car in reverse to move it. It happened many times in the very short trip home (I didn't know what the problem was, had no cell phone, and foolishly drove it home).
Fast forward to a few hours ago. We had flooding. I was driving home from work. I attempted to turn a short corner after being stopped (like before) and I swear the car locked up on me. I'm not entirely sure, as I was watching 2 vehicles on each side as I was turning. I may have clipped the curb a bit with the back right wheel, and got stuck. At any rate, I put it in reverse, and everything was fine on the 4-mile stretch to home (unlike before, where it did it 11 times in 3/4 mile!).
I'm wondering if:
1. Could it be due to the excessive wetness from the road? It was bad. Could the belt have slipped a bit?
2. Could the power steering fluid be low?
I'm afraid to drive it until I find out. Hopefully, Dh, who was a mechanic, can look at it tonight. Thanks.
