Movin' on up!
Last night and tonight, at about 8:00 p.m., my patio looked a scene from the movie "Them!" It was covered with huge black ants. Last night, we were out of ant dust and the only bug spray that I had was Yard Guard. I was worried that they would get into the house so I brought the dogs in and sprayed along the doorsill. This morning, the patio was covered with shriveled black bodies.

I called Bill, before I went to worked and told him to pick up some Green Light, on his way home. When he got home, there wasn't an ant in sight. Tonight, I went outside for a cigarette and was reading a book. When I got up, they were back. Once again, dogs into the house. Taking a flashlight, I was able to trail them back to their hole, in the neighbor's yard and I dusted it but good! I also put a line of the stuff, along the fence (outside, of course).

I hate bugs and the thought of having my house infested gives me the creeps. On top of that, I'm allergic to ant bites and get huge, red, stinging welts. The dogs were bitten a few times but seem to be none the worse for wear. Hopefully, this will cure the problem. Wonder why they only come out at 8:00 p.m. though?

The worst ants I've encountered in NH are carpenter ants.
They were living in my attic (no access) and were munching over my bedroom ceiling at night (sounded like cellophane being crinkled).
It makes me shudder to think about it.
I had to call an exterminator who found several nests in my home.
He had to fog my attic and I had to get a new roof (the moisture was attracting them).

Thank God we don't have fire ants (chills from the thought)

Ok - I am itchy now!

If you have carepenter ants in your ceiling get your exteerminator in - they will be doing structural damage to your house! We had to have our house done a few years back!

Yes, big and black

Rest assured, after several exterminator visits they are gone.
I panicked this spring when I saw one and had the perimiter of the house sprayed.

They love trees & vegetation. I have let things grow a bit out of control around my house (where's Kev when you need him??

I have a gigantic evergreen next to my house that the ants were traveling from . . . to my roof. . . .

I have a neighbor down the road who had ants in her attic too.

This makes me think of something funny that Molly did this spring. My daughter was rummaging through the crawl space in her upstairs bedroom going through some boxes. Molly just loves the attic and snuck in. She came running out with a glue board stuck to her! (non-toxic) The exterminator placed them in the event that the problem persisted so he could find their trail. I don't know who was more upset, my daughter or the cat. Poor Molly!

Oh trust me. I know all about these little monsters.
I've had my past problems with them (at another house).
They ate through the support beam.

I have a friend who bought an upscale (fairly new home) in the same neighborhood where I used to live. She and her husband were doing some renovations to the kitchen. It was late at night and they pulled out the old dishwasher. Out came thousands of big black carpenter ants all over the kitchen! There was a nest behind the diswasher. She had nightmares after.

Right here! :)
EEEwwwwwwww!
Ants bite? I didn´t know that!
We don´t even have ants in Iceland!!! (So how many of you are moving?
)

Well actually, I think I have once seen an ant here in Iceland, but baybe it was just a similar bug, since there was just one...

When I am abroad, I just find ants so facinating with their organized foodhund, I never realized they can bite.
Thats the good part about living in a cold country!

Oh gross! I had carpenter ants in my last apt. At night (I guess it was mating season), the drones were literally swarming in my bedroom at night. It ttok the complex FOREVER to come in and get rid of them one and for all.

And Cindy...thanks for the giggle. When I saw the thread title, that was the exact movie I thought of.......Thought I was the only one who would think of that film.

These are garden-variety leaf-cutter ants but those powerful jaws can make a nasty bite. I don't think that they'll be back. Between dusting their hole and laying a perimeter, "THEM!" are dead.
