Esme and Naku had their vet visit today with a brand new vet and overall, it went well. They are also raw food supporters, so we got kudos for that. Esme was healthy all around and Naku was, mostly.

When they looked at Naku's teeth, they said he had gingivitis for sure and he has "super erupted canines". They recommended for him to get a good dental cleaning and at that time, they will look closer at this canines to see if they need to be removed.
They noted on Esme's sheet that she had gingivitis too, but didn't say anything about recommendations for her.

When we adopted Naku last fall, he had such terrible breath! We adopted both the kitties last year and have tried brushing their teeth, but they are not trying to have any of that. So, we have recently started giving them C.E.T dental treats which has helped, for sure.

So, I was quoted about $320 for a dental cleaning (which seems reasonable based on some other costs I have seen). Does anyone have any experience with their kitty and "super erupted canines"?

I also made Naku's appointment to get his teeth cleaned for the 27th, so please send him some vibes that his little canines can stay in!

No experience with Super Erupted Canines..... Once you do the cleaning, the raw feeding should help keeping the inflammation down, in re. to the gingivitis - it has for my Bugsy on his stomatitis :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: :hugs:

Thanks! I sure hope so. They said after his cleaning, the raw is fine to feed since it is soft enough.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
 Great news on their annuals! Bummer about the "super erupted canines." I've never heard of that, and have no idea what it is. I do know that Spooky and Chumley have bad teeth and have to have annual dentals, and both have had a number of teeth pulled. Chum was on raw, and didn't have any problem eating afterwards - though he did skip the first meal. I actually fed him a number of smaller meals that first day or two, but he was a bit nauseous from the anesthesia. He had three teeth pulled.

Lazlo had a problem with gingivitis - this was observed when he was diagnosed with cancer. The holistic vet put him on an herbal appetite stimulant that also cures gingivitis. It did, and at his last vet visit a couple of months ago, there was still no problem with it. I do think the raw diet will help a lot, it just takes some time. :cross:

I am going to get more explanation on it when he goes in for his cleaning. I know the cleaning though will definitely help his situation because ever since we adopted him last year, his breath has been atrocious. I'll definitely keep a watch on him for the night when I bring him home and hopefully he comes back to his normal self shortly. I feel pretty good about this vet and she said she will let me know more once she is done with his cleaning on whether or not the teeth can remain or not. I guess the issue is the gingivitis being more progressed, but they can't tell how bad until they get a good look.

So far, the raw diet has only been positive, so I sure do hope it will help with his teeth.

Naku had his cleaning today and we found out that he does not need to have his canines taken out! So, he now has super clean teeth and a little brushing plan to keep them clean.

The brushing -- well that should be more than interesting. I am seriously tempted to buy the cat bag to be able to do his cleanings. Naku does not like to held one single bit and he is surprisingly strong for his little self!

I was told not to brush his teeth for about a month and when I do, to only brush the sides.

I feel bad for the little guy because he hasn't had anything to eat since midnight lastnight and they said we can't feed him until the AM.

Does anyone have teeth brushing tips? They gave me some C.E.T toothpaste with the fingertip brush.

I wish I could explain more, but I don't have all of the info. Since his cleaning, they said he was fine. So who knows?
