I am facing this right now 9/14/12 with my cat Jasper Ann. I worry she may not be with me this PM when I get home from work.  This will be heart breaking again since I loss Midnight Nov. 11 .Such dear little animals to me.  Jasper has shadows in her lungs.  She has lost down to 5.9 lbs and has to be coaxed to eat or drink.  She  is very bony and is staggering. I would appreciate any suggestions. I have never put one down . I just stayed with them until they passed away. Thanks

I'm very, very sorry. It's so difficult to part with our beloved kitties, even when we know that having them euthanized will spare them pain. You might want to clip some of her hair to keep or make an impression of her pawprint. Your vet will have some experience with this and will probably allow you to hold and stroke her while she's given the injection(s). The sound of your voice telling her how loved she is and how much you'll miss her will be soothing to her, and she'll slip away very quickly. Just remember that an easy passing is the last gift of love you can give her, and an important one.

Where my cats are
This is the hardest part of being a pet-parent.  I have had them (cats and a dog) go on their own unexpectedly and I've also had to have them put to sleep.  The last cat we lost I wasn't in the room for the procedure; but I did go there to say goodbye.  I had just gotten married a few weeks before this and she was still living with my parents since she was the family cat.  She was in terrible shape, skin and bones.  My Mother had wrapped her in a towel because she seemed so cold.  I leaned gently over her as I whispered my goodbyes and told her she would feel better soon in her ear...and she actually started to purr.  It has always given me such peace.  You will know when it is time.

I have buried a lock of my hair with my kitties and my dog.  So a part of me stays with them forever.  I kept their collars and toys.  I have a special box for those things.

I am sorry for what your are going through with Jasper.  Love your kitty and take one day at the time.  You will know what to do when the time comes.
