Does anyone purchase tickets to hospital lotteries?  We have a few hospitals here that have frequent lotteries for big prizes.  I've never bought any tickets because it is a lottery so the money spent is not tax deductable, But I know several people who have won cash, cars and even one person who managed to win the top prize.

These lotteries have a set number of tickets that they sell, unlike weekly lotteries where there is no limit to the number of tickets that can be entered for the draw.

So today I bit the bullet and bought some tickets.

The nice thing about these lotteries is that if you win in one round, your ticket goes back in and you still have chances to win in the other draws.  The final draw is in December where they award the house.

Obviously I'm hoping to win something!! This is the first time they are offering a cash amount in lieu of the house. I'd definitely go for the cash!!

Yes, I used to buy them twice a year, whenever they were offered, because they were for the Barrow Neurological Center, and I have had 2 friends who were helped by them.  Have won a couple of times, but both times the prizes I won were worth less than the price of the tickets.  But since it went for a good cause, that was ok.

Finally decided to stop, was better just to make straight donations, which ARE tax deductible

Good luck!  As they say "can't win if you don't play!!"

Thanks!

I figure since I know so many people who have won prizes, including the top prize, that tells me that you actually have a chance to win something, unlike regular weekly lottery draws where millions and millions of people are buying tickets.

The only prize I'm hoping to NOT win is the sports stuff. While the season tickets to the NHL Winnipeg Jets are coveted and people are on waiting lists to buy them, it just doesn't interest me.  Though my brother said that he would be glad to take them off my hands if I won them.  LOL  They are worth about $6,000 per ticket, and the prize is 2 tickets. Anyway, I told him that if I won something sports related, like the season tickets, I'd sell them to him for the price of my lottery expense.  So needless to say he's hoping I win Jets season tickets!  LOL

My parents buy the ones for the hospital where I was when I was an infant. They've been buying them for years and have won a couple of times; my dad won $1000 once and my mom won a gift certificate to a department store here.

A few years ago they stopped doing the house because people usually took the cash payout instead, but ticket sales dropped a lot and they brought the house back. They do it twice a year I believe (although that may be two different hospitals that do it).

That's the same here. We have several hospitals in the City, but the ones doing the lotteries are the children's hospital and 2 large teaching hospitals with one being a trauma centre, so between the 3, it seems like there is always a lottery.

I thought I'd have remorse after spending that much money on lottery, considering I don't gamble and rarely even play the weekly lotteries. But I don't!  So I may just buy again in a future one. I don't think I'd buy tickets for all though, that would get really costly, especially if I don't win anything.

But I'm so excited. This is my first one so I have high hopes.  lol

I haven't heard of hospital lotteries in my area, but that's something I would definitely participate if I had the $$$.  My aunt and uncle used to attend some kind of charity benefit dinners that were maybe $100.00 a plate.   Everyone got a ticket to be in a drawing for a prize.  The top prizes were cars.  I always wanted to go to one of those events.  Gosh, I hope you win!

I've always wanted to buy tickets, but they are too pricey for me. Maybe someday when I have the money.

My parents used to buy hospital lottery tickets, and I remember them winning a big color TV when I was a teenager. That was great, because I got the old one for my bedroom. :lol3:
