I'm a new cat owner and quickly finding out that they shouldn't just eat dry food like our dogs. What is the best canned food for my 5 month old kitten?,

A wide variety is best. IMO, you should always maintain a rotation of at least 5-6 different flavors/brands if at all possible. And while he's young it's a good idea to feed even a wider range of flavors so he doesn't get too stuck on one kind. So, one of everything! :D

I feed Nutro Max Cat and Nutro Natural Choice wet foods mainly but also throw in a lot of different premium foods to give them different flavors and textures.   "Most" of the kitten food out there is the pate' texture so you may not have a lot of luck with the textures but the flavors vary from brand to brand.  You can check out the Nutro lines at http://www.nutro.com/natural-pet-food/natural-cat-food.aspx   But like I said, mix 'em up with whatever your budget allows.  Of the Nutro lines the Nutro Max Cat is the more economical of the 2 lines.

Try a variety of foods like Weruva, Nature's Variety and By Nature 95%. These foods are the best IMO! For a kitten I'm not too sure. :dk: My kitten is currently eating raw, but before that she was eating Royal Canin Kitten. :D

If a brand has larger cans, you can save money by buying them instead of the smaller ones. It's a bit more work, as you'll have to cover and refrigerate the unused portion of each can, but it doesn't take so much longer that the money saved won't make up for it. Plus there's less waste.

Also, my store gives a 5% discount for buying canned food by the case. Not sure about other stores, but that could be another way to save money.
