Do you drive? If so, do you enjoy it?

I used to love to drive but am happier as a passenger these days, when possible. I don't like driving in huge cities, but can do it okay if I study the map. I don't mind driving here in Victoria but I know everywhere, and it's a small city. REALLY don't like driving in mountains, like the Rockies, everybody goes way too fast.

Well, we kind of have to drive around here :lol3:. No mass transit and everything is 30 miles away or more. I dunno if I LIKE it, but I need to get places. I don't like being a passenger; no control.

I can drive, but generally only use the car for vet visits and an occasional trip to the supermarket. I commute to work by train, and our town is so small you can easily reach any destination on foot.

I used to drive a taxi, and I enjoyed driving very much. It was an Impala with the police package. I couldn't really romp down on it too hard, but it was fun to know I could and for bouncing unruly passengers around. I don't go anywhere by myself but the store 6 miles away. Dh takes me where I need to go, dr. appointments and to see the granddaughters.

Oddly, I've never had a driver's license. I was the youngest in my family and there was no one to teach me. By the time I was 18, I was in Boot Camp, then schools and sea after that. When I got out of the Navy, I couldn't afford a car anyway, so there was no point; besides, I lived close to public transportation. Now that I'm almost 50, I don't want to drive because if I ever hurt anything, I would never, ever be able to forgive myself.

Yes, I drive, and have done it since age 17.  That was a long itme ago too.  I always loved to drive until about 13 years ago.  I had two wrecks caused by people turning out or pulling out in front of me.  Neither was my fault.  But in the second one, I totalled my car, injured knees and had to do physical therapy.  It took away my want to.  Most of the time hubby drives although I can if I have to.

That's wild! You might be the only American I've ever heard of who never learned how to drive. (I know a couple people who never learned how to ride a bike though. :lol3:) If I were you, I would learn just in case there's an emergency, but I understand your fear about not wanting to hit or hurt anything. A car accident will do that to you too

I myself am ambivalent about driving. I find it mostly boring and usually wish I could be a passenger reading instead. :lol3: Books on tape help.

I'd much rather live in a place where I didn't need a car to do my daily transportation. Orlando has buses, but that's about it, and they'd take me an hour to get to work every day (as opposed to 30 minutes in my car).

Like Willowy, I haven't much choice - minimum 30 miles one way for anything but fuel. There is a grocery store, well a glorified convenience store,, 8 miles away but the nearest large grocery store is 30 miles away and so is the nearest place to get cat food that these guys will eat. If I want something more 'exotic', it's a 50 mile trip one way. Thing is, use Westerners look at distance differently because of the huge unpopulated areas and a 50 mile one way trip really isn't much, nor is a 3 hour drive as both are a fact of life. This weekend,, West Meadows Raceway opens, and it's 60 miles one way, not a big deal at all.

I love to drive! I own a Jeep Liberty Sport (2004) and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

My favorite ride is on my way (and back) from my parents which his 30 miles away. I enjoy it because the road is surrounded by trees and it's such a relaxing drive, enjoying the scenery.. unless there's traffic. then I hate it!

I LOVE driving and taking trips. The last few days have been beautiful "driving days" IMO. Last Thursday we drove from Charleston to Savannah, spent the night, then drove to Palm Coast FL and back to Charleston the next day to get a car in FL. I've driven from SC to Illinois and back in a weekend to trade vehicles.

It was absolutely gorgeous driving through the mountains up there. I do tend to like to be a passenger when driving through scenic areas because I'm always wanting to snap pics! Especially if there's no pull-offs like the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains have for you to stop at.

As long as it's just around town I'm ok with it; but I'd rather be the passenger!  DH is a pro; nothing rattles him!  So he does 99.8% of the driving when we are together.  I don't do city driving and I don't drive in the snow or freezing weather if possible.  My first job after college my boss would come get me if we got snow!  That's how little I like driving in it!  I drive a Subaru now and I've heard so many good things about how they handle in the snow but I still dont want to test it.  DH says if we get a good snow and he knows I wont be going anywhere; he's taking it to work!

I do have one friend whose driving scares me bad enough that I do the driving.

I love to drive EXCEPT in the big city. I get anxious in heavy traffic and am lucky that my jobs have always been in the suburbs. I also love to take road trips by car up to visit my parents up North.

I wouldn't say that I like or dis-like it. It's just something I do. I live in the boonies and have to commute to work. For years I drove on the right hand side of a left-hand drive (normal) vehicle delivering the mail. For the past year and a half I've been driving a RHD postal truck. I always drive when we go to Portland to visit DD and DGS. They just moved into their new house so I had to drive into a new part of the city. Just printed out Mapquest, programmed the GPS and was on our way. I feel safer driving than being the passenger. I'm not a very good passenger. lol!

I can drive a submarine. :salute:
Hehe, my dad can drive an aircraft carrier! Or he could when they were boiler-powered (he was a Machinist's Mate). Apparently they don't work that way anymore. But, surprisingly, he didn't get his driver's license until he was 30. They lived in San Diego and he either took the bus or had my mom drive him. What is it about you Navy men? :tongue2:.

You can't do much driving at sea and in-port, there are other activities taking our time.
