Mițu, my kitten is almost 6 months old. We went to the vet with him and they gave him 2 vaccines. Distemper and leukemia ( also the person that I adopted the kitten from gave him 2 shots of the same thing)..after that we had to go for the buster shots but Mițu had a cold so we skip them. Now he got neutered...the vet wants to give him the shots again just because we skiped the buster and they are saying that they don't have effect without busters. Are busters that important? I know vaccines are important, but I read horror stories about side effects and I don't want to go over board with vaccines.
Can I just skip those and vaccinate him when he is 1 year?
Thank you.

Two questions.

1. Does Mitu go outside?

If he does, I would keep him "current" on his vaccines. Generally he'll get what's called an FVRCP vaccine (info on that here), which includes distemper. This is also known as an RCCP vaccine, but this version includes chalmydia protection as well.

BUT.

Please make sure you ask for and get the PureVax brand of vaccines. They're sold by Merial, a large animal pharmaceutical company who makes lots of other things, and your vet should be able to order PureVax for you fairly easily if they don't carry them. Mine does :)

Some of the "horror stories" of vaccines, like sarcomas, can be avoided with PureVax vaccines. :)

PureVax is available for rabies and RCCP (but not FVRCP).

2. Has Mitu ever had a rabies shot that you know of?

If not, I would get him one ASAP. I don't know where you live, but the authorities can be picky about rabies shots in some areas, especially if Mitu ever bites someone and they need medical treatment.

If I were you, and if Mitu doesn't go outside, I would wait until he is a year old for the RCCP shot and give him the PureVax one. He won't need it again until he's at least 5 years old. If he hasn't had a rabies shot, I would also get him a PureVax rabies shot.

If he DOES go outside, I would give him both PureVax shots immediately, or when he goes to be neutered. :)

Hope that helps!!

Hi, thank you for replay.
No, he is only inside cat...the only outside he sees is when he goes to the vet.
He didn't get his rabies vaccine, I am really scared about that because I found out today that his brother ( adopted by someone else) had a bad reaction to his neuter/ rabies vaccine and today they put him down:( I am thinking about not givin him anymore vaccines until he is 1. He is very important to me and if something happenes I will go crazy.

Okay. Well, if he's inside only, the vaccines can certainly wait until he's one, but I would get them sooner than that if I were you just for my own peace of mind. I would be so sad if my babies got a disease because I didn't vaccinate them in time.

Like I said, vaccine reactions are significantly reduced by the PureVax brand, so that's something to consider.

If he already had 2 shots when you got him, he doesn't need anything else until the 1 year booster and then every 3 years, or some people don't do anymore after the 1yr shot.

He only needs the 3 in 1 shot, not leukaemia
