My cats haven't been in the house for at least a month, and there are fleas in my house! How are they surviving?!

YOU are dragging them in, most likely.   I was at walmart the other day, and had a BYB brush against me in an aisle, and 5 minutes later, I had fleas crawling on me, coming up from my shoes. It took 10 minutes of picking and killing fleas right there inside the store before I got them all.  So far, no fleas in my house.

Flea eggs live in the carpet, the upholstery and the cracks in the floor. They continue to hatch for a long long time after a host animal is no longer there. Your best action would probably be some kind of fog treatment, but make sure it is something that kills eggs and larvae, not just adult fleas. Even so, you may have to fog more than once.

Vacuum everything daily. Keep bits of flea collar in your vacuum cleaner bag to keep any thing that hatches in the vacuum cleaner. Empty the canister into a small trash bag, and take the bag to outside trash, after every vacuuming session.

Just to add, I would also clean out the canister with soap and hot water and let it air dry. When we had an infestation after moving into a new apartment (we usually bomb prior to moving in, but didn't this time), and after many bombings we had them narrowed down to the couch. So, we sprinkled borax under the cushions and let it sit for a few days before vacuuming it up, and that killed the last of the fleas. Just make sure pets or kids can't get into the borax.

Use the vacum cleaner every day.  That way you will get all the eggs up.  Dump the cannister outside.   Good luck.
