hi everyone!  this is my first post here.  :)

i'm a proud and happy cat mom to finn, a handsome tuxedo cat; we adopted him from a local rescue organization back in january.  he's always been a little on the larger size and we've been working with the vet to get him to a healthier weight.  he's gone through some food changes in these few months but he's always had a hearty appetite.

at our most recent trip to the vet, we talked about his skin & fur issues (itching a lot, dandruff, etc) and the doctor suggested we try a limited ingredient diet.  her recommendations were natural balance duck & pea or salmon & pea, both wet can varieties.  we know he prefers poultry to fish, so we started the duck & pea.  he was eating it fine until sometime last week.

since then, he hasn't been finishing his food or sometimes, even eating at all.  he smells it and walks away.  we're trying new ways to get him to eat (adding in some shredded cheese - he's a big cheese fan) but still, he only eats a small amount.  i'm worried because his bathroom habits are slowing down because he's barely eating.  it got to the point where, even though we had eliminated dry food from his diet, my boyfriend gave him some just so he would eat SOMETHING.

meanwhile, when i asked the doctor, she told me he needs to remain on the duck & pea only diet to weed out any potential allergies.  it's been 3 weeks and he's already seemingly tired of the food and i can't go another 6-9 weeks worrying about finn's eating & food habits all the time. we were going to mix it up with the salmon & pea but our vet told us he needs to stick to his current diet.  i can't imagine him not eating and therefore not going to the bathroom is healthier than potentially switching to another variety of the same food brand.

any suggestions/comments/help/etc would be greatly appreciated!  also, has this happened with anyone else?

thanks for reading!

Hi and Welcome!

Finn is a beautiful Boy - thank you for taking good care of him!

You made the right choice - cats shouldn't eat fish every day.

Also, I agree with you - overweight cats in particular are at risk of developing Fatty Liver Disease

if they go for more than 24 hours without eating, so I would rather give him

something he is allergic to than risk him getting really sick.

I would try By Nature 95% and/or EVO 95% - they are both grain free,

and as the name implies, they are both 95% meat.

By Nature has Chicken or Turkey,

and EVO has Chicken, Duck, Beef or Venison that might be worthwhile -

actually, EVO has a Variety Pack Case with 3 or 4 of each flavor.

My cats love them!

PetFoodDirect.com has very good prices on these,

especially if you select "Auto Ship" which can be delayed, changed or cancelled at any time.

I hope this helps!

Please keep us informed on his progress!

Well, if you want to do a true elimination diet (to rule out allergies), yes, you have to stick with one kind of food, not even any treats (unless made of the same stuff as the daily diet). If that doesn't really matter to you, go ahead and find a few more he can eat. Under normal circumstances, I think offering at least 5-6 different brands/flavors is ideal.

And, yes, a cat absolutely needs to eat! They can die of liver failure if they go too long without eating enough. Since you've been adding things like cheese and a few kibbles, I think the elimination diet has been negated. So you might as well try another flavor. But you should definitely stick with the canned food! And try to minimize fish flavors--especially for males. Here's some good reading on the subject: www.catinfo.org

Yeah, for an elimination diet, especially for skin issues, kitty really needs to be onthe food alone for at least 6 weeks....
With that said, especially with him being on the larger side, he HAS to eat - at this point, I wouldn't care what - as long as he eats - even if Fancy Feast, Friskies, whatever, as long as he eats.
In a larger cat, the liver can go down fast - so please, act quickly - dump the diet for now, and just worry about feeding him. You pick up from where you left at later on..... But now, eating should be his first priority :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

How big is Finn? Does he have any bald spots from itching? Where does he itch? Does he have bald spots on his front legs from licking too much?
It sounds to me like its more of a grooming issue than an allergy issue. Cats get itchy and flaky when they can't reach all of themselves to groom. I'd give him a good bath, either by yourself or a groomer and then make a habit of brushing him every day.
And like everyone else said, better to be itchy than starving. Give him his old/favourite food and if then he doesn't eat, take him into the vet. If your vet says everything is fine, take him to a new vet.

Welcome to TCS!!
