Why is it that it seems so difficult to home black, and black&white cats????? this is something i have been told many times, and I have to say i don't understand it at all.  They are my favourite colour cats in the world, well, apart from greys which are very difficult to find.  I don't like torties particularly, or gingers, particularly not ginger and white, must have been scared by them as a child.  So, has anyone else heard of this weird thing with blacks/black&whites?  or is it just in the UK?

a lot of people believe black cats are bad luck, or just not as 'pretty' as other cats. When I volunteered, there was a lot of black and tuxedo kitties there too, and it made me sad.

I love tuxedos.. I have a soft spot for them.. probably because my first cat was a tuxedo!

Yes, I kinda get that about the black cats, but I don't think that at all.  They also have that bad rep as witches familiars etc.  Loolllllooooollll, my mobile phone just rang and Lady (yep that's what i'm sticking with instead of Dotty), leapt off the back of the sofa and is growling!!! ha ha ha ha ah ha!  Soooooo funny!  So, back to the colour thing.  I've always loved black cats, they are mesmerising. But then a great aunt had one when I was a little girl and he was sooooo loving to me, so i guess that's where that comes from, and black n whites are just sooooo cute, especially if they have a pink nose!!! Sweet as anything.  My Lady is now so loving toward me already and i've only had her 4 days.  She sits with me on the sofa, grooms me, and she can chitter and purr at the same time, I've never known a cat do that!!!!   I'm in LOOOOOVE............... if only her brother would come back!

My friends that have cats all have either black or black and white, I'm up in Newcastle :)

When I went for Sooty I had all intentions of getting a black cat!! He is amazing he's the sweetest most loving cat ever, I don't understand why people think they are evil and scary

I love them all, no matter what color. Oh but I guess I do have sort of a soft spot for orange kitties, as my first cat was orange, as was BJ and Angel. But I don't care what color they are - love them all (we have a tuxedo also).

Yup, most people think black and black&white cats are not as 'cute' as other colorings. Most shelters don't do adoptions of black cats a couple weeks before Halloween, it's that bad. A black cat with any kind of problems in a shelter is..... not too well off....

I have to agree that ALL cats are absolutely amazing creature.  Their capacity to show love and gentleness when you are ill or upset always stuns me.   I would have to say that I too love cats regardless of colour, but of course we all have the ones where no matter what, we just go Aaaaaaaawh!

I don't understand the thing about black cats either....they're just gorgeous.

My first cat (after we got married) was a black cat with just a few white chest hairs and big golden eyes. His name was Hydrox (short for Hydrox P. Puddy) and he was beautiful. He lived to be 20 years old. I could (and did) sit for hours and just watch him when he was lying in the sun. His fur would glisten with every move. Black cats are beautiful.

(But my heart will always belong to fluffy grey tabbies. With white paws.)

My very first rescue was a black cat, Mischief Mistoffolees.  He is a hustler and smak-talking, street-wise thug kitty.  He was sponging meals and places to sleep at 4 different houses as a stray, till the neighbors finally started talking and realized that he didn't actually live with any of them.  :)  So, they bundled him up and took him to the shelter.  He snagged my sleeve walking by his alcove a couple days later, and he's been here ever since.

Excellent, he sounds like a brilliant cat, but then aren't they all in their own way?

Thank you.  I had a beautiful seal point (I think that's what it is called) Siamese with the most beautiful blue eyes.  she was stunning and very loving and friendly for a Siamese, but unfortunately when I was pregnant she became nasty with me, I figured that would not be good when baby came, so I rehomed her.  I was right, she did not like children at all.  Beautiful cat though!

I don't know how common the belief was, but black cats, who have always been associated with witches, almost always have a few white hairs.  Those hairs have been referred to as "the angel's touch."  It was believed that only a perfectly black cat could be a witch's familiar, so whenever a black kitten is born, an angel comes and touches it.  Where the angel touches the kitten, it will have a white spot, ranging from a few hairs to the full tuxedo treatment.

Our shelter doesn't stop black cats from being adopted at Halloween.  By the time someone spends $75 for a cat and gives us a driver's license and a credit card, we figure they have enough invested and have created enough of a trail that we could track them down if something happened.  And, since our AC officers pick up all dead animals as well as live ones, and every cat that leaves the shelter is chipped, we wouldn't have any trouble identifying the cat, either.

Yes, I've heard that about angels touching black cats.  My lovely Lady has maybe a dozen white hairs just on her breast bone area. soooooo cute.

I think black cats are beautiful and I don't understand why some people are still afraid of them.  But because some people do find them frightening, I wonder if some shelters just don't try hard enough to find good homes for them.

Sweetie is the second black cat I've adopted from a shelter.   Years ago, when I adopted my first black cat Midnight,  the lady at the shelter showed me quite a few cats of various colors but none seemed to be the right fit for my home.  This shelter lady never ever mentioned the little black cat who was standing on a box away from the other cats.  I just happened to see Midnight and went up to her and she seemed absolutely perfect.  Midnight and I developed a very strong bond and spent many happy years together.  She's been gone for 11 years now, but I still think about her and remember all the good times we had.

DH and I have a rainbow assortment of cats, lol.  Our Blackberry is probably the most gentle of them all.  Sorry, I'm a terrible photographer.  She's much prettier in person.
