Ok I'm sure this has been asked before and I understand it has been known for cats to do this but I'm not sure if it's likely the case with my cat here; she's 12 years old I believe, so not really old just yet and she's always been relatively healthy, or she seems so to me. She can still manage quite high jumps and keeps herself active and aside from her being sick a couple of times in the past there's been no real scares with her. But this morning she came in late (our cats go out at night) with what looked like a busted leg, she couldn't put any weight on it and was hobbling around the house, she did eat her food though. I called the vet and booked an appointment as soon as I could which was in a few hours time and in the meantime I thought she seemed ok because she made it up the stairs albeit with some effort and had a bit of a nap. One thing I should mention though is that she went in quite secluded spaces where she doesn't normally; under my bed, behind the couch, in a room she never goes in, and I did read elsewhere cats sometimes try and find spots like this nearing their death. Anyway after a while I saw her hobble downstairs again and I went and got her bowl and gave her a bit to eat and put her bed by it thinking she'd go back to napping there, but when I next went downstairs she wasn't there and she wasn't in any other room of the house. I've now looked all round the garden and checked everywhere I think she might have gone with no joy. She doesn't leave the house that much in the daytime when she's healthy never mind when she's lacking use of one of her legs so I can't have thought she'd have been physically able to go far

She's been gone a good few hours now and I've missed the vet appointment, am I just overreacting or do I have cause to be concerned?

Yeah, you should be concerned as she does need vet care ASAP..... As far as cats "going away to die".....sure It happens..... And it can happen to your cat if her leg gets infected enough and she doesn't receive medical treatment.....
With that said - Cats hide when they are not feeling well or are in pain - that is instinctive - on those cases, nothing to do with dying. Your cat is not feeling well, and is in pain.
The reason why they hide, is to be protected from predators, it comes from their time in the wild - they are not well enough to fight, and are giving signals that they are an easy prey.... That's all.
IMHO you should do everything possible to find your cat and take to the vet - do not think it went away to die - it is just hurt and in need of medical care.... please..... go look for her. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Thanks for the reply Carolina, I eventually managed to get her back a couple of hours after posting by shaking the food around and she came hobbling back, not sure where she went but she was in real pain so I took her straight to the emergency vet who took her in overnight (I'm in the UK so it's about 2am here) and he's just got back to me saying she had dislocated her toe and he's fixed it now, it cost a small fortune to get it all done and on a Friday night but the alternatives were a lot worse so I'm thankful :)

For future reference to save you money, a broken toe isn't anything that needs an emergency vet. It was good that you took her in to get pain medication, but after that you can wait till morning to give her the surgery.

I'm glad she came home safe. :)
