My husband and I just got a baby kitten from people giving them away in a parking lot. We were told that they were about 6 weeks and have not had their shots. We have had her for about 3 days and I made a vets appt for monday, but last night my husband noticed worms on her butt. What is the best way to go about deworming her and is it still ok to get her shots on monday?

I would say shots at 6 weeks is too early. But deworming and vet check up is in order yes.

The worms are prob round worms, as almost all not dewormed kittens have. Kittens get it from their not dewormed moms.  Let the vet advice you,

Avoid OTC, unless you can get hold of Banminth for cats or equivalent.  Banminth is known to be mild even to kittens.  Banminths active substance is Pyrantel.  So I presume  noname brands with Pyrantel may also be OK..

It may also be tapeworms if she is fleas-infested.

She may even be somewhat younger than 6 weeks, with such one ex-owners.

Nay, I wouldnt recommend shots or other vaccinations as yet. Or at least ask the vet before.  And yes, I do understand your question, both shots and deworming at the same time in a tiny one may be too much, she will surely be deep down several days.

So the natural solution is to give it in two different portions so to speak.

What are you givning her to eat? How is she going? Do you have a resident or other animal companion?

Welcome to our Forums!

Good luck!

I ended up calling my vet to see what they think I should do. They had me come up and get a deworming tablet. Also I asked them about shots they said most kittens should get their shots around 6 weeks old. They didn't want to do the shot the same day as the deworming. We are feeding her purina kitten chow. She seems to like it. And she goes regularly. We do have another cat he is about 2 yrs old. The vet told me to keep them separate for the day and just to make sure to clean her box frequently today so that she doesn't step in it and then injest it a
gain.

Normally we do recommend a longer quarantine, at least till the vet check up.  How strickt and long quarantine depends, if the resident fully healthy and used to roam outside you dont need to overdo it.

HERE the vet meant she is pooing out dying worms after that pill, and probably having some diarrhea (the diarrhea here is in itself a sign there were worms), and he doenst want them to be spread around...

Yes, a very sensible advice.   :).

If it is ok for vet with early vaccinations, so it should be OK.   :)

Good you resolutely did contacted him.    :)

Good luck!

Agree, a day is just not long enough which a vet should know. Flu can take a few weeks to show up, I would also want the worms clear before introducing them or sharing litter trays. I wouldn't vaccinate before 8 weeks. You can also book her in for spaying from around 10 weeks, provided she weighs 1kg/2lbs.

I'd be feeding her raw and/or wet food, not just dry.
