Rabies vaccine used to be good for 3 yrs, without looking it back up, seems like it was Merrill, killed vaccine they used.  Now they are using something called Pure Vax, and its only good for 1 yr.   Something about, the 3 yrs causes cancer, or something, and oh by the way, it costs, alot more, $27 as opposed to $17, for the 3 yrs.

Geez, just got the distemper all straightened out, with the brothers, vet said they changed their policy, people feel they are over vaccinating, I do know about that, so now, the exact same distemper shot, they feel is good for 3 yrs, not 1 yr.

So, OK, if we are over vaccinating, and they feel the distemper is good for 3 yrs, why is the rabies now only good for 1 yr, and would that not fall into the catagory, of over vaccinating?

Yes, the shows require these shots, but even if I wasn't showing, they would still get them, I want them protected.

Am I the only person, lol, who thinks, something ain't right, with this picture?

p.s. the vet admitted, they made a mistake, the one brother, is, good for 3 yrs, and does not need, another distemper shot, after he already got one, last year, which he really didn't need, and now the brothers, are 1 yr off.  My mind is gone.

Tthe PureVax rabies vaccine doesn't have adjuvant in it, which is the ingredient in vaccines that can cause an inflammatory response that can lead to cancer. So it is safer to give the Purevax every year than to give the adjuvanted vaccine once every 3 years. And PureVax is working on getting their 3-year approval, hopefully soon!

It's good your vet has gone to the 3-year schedule for the FVCRP vaccine. That's the current AAHA/AVMA recommendations. Still too often in my opinion (I'd be OK with every 5-7 years), but much better than annually. Overvaccinating causes all kinds of problems.

So if the pure vax, doesn't have the adjuvant in it, and its safer, what about the adjuvant in the distemper shots, or doesn't it have it in it?   I guess, I should ask, what exactly is, adjuvant, lol.

Did ya ever think, of opening up, a on line school, teaching pet parents, about vaccinations, LOL.

I don't do the 3 year vaccine for my cat. He gets the 1 year vaccine. Better to be safe than sorry for my 15 year old buddy.

Make sure it's Purevax. . .some vets will give the 3-year vaccine annually and call it a 1-year vaccine. But if it's not Purevax it's the same as the 3-year vaccine!

Flint, there was a recent discussion of vaccines - with many VERY helpful links. I know you show your cats, so need to vaccinate. But if you'd like to learn about vaccinations and cat health (and cancer), there's a lot of referenced information/links in this thread: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/245463/do-indoor-cats-really-need-vaccines

My interest in vaccination schedules was piqued by health-compromised kitties, combined that learning that our vets get rabies vaccinations - every 7 to 10 years. There are existing studies that show the rabies vaccine is effective for 4 - 7 years, and an ongoing study by the Rabies Challenge Fund.

The vet place where I take my cat has 3 vets in it, all female vets. My cat has been examined by all three of them during the last three years. Since Tiger is a senior cat, he gets two checkups during a 12 month time frame.

All the vets explained the pros and cons of the two different vaccines. All three of them have recommended the 1 year vaccine because of the additives in the 3 year vaccines which have produced tumors in some cats.

Still, they said it was my choice and my choice was to keep my buddy out of harm's way and this is why I go with the 1 year rabies vaccine.

^^^ that. I love the purevax rabies and my vet and I are waiting with great anticipation for it to be approved as a 3 year vaccine in my state. Seems like I recently read one state, Texas I believe, is very close to this approval. Hopefully that will break the ice and more will follow.

Rabies is such a big problem in my state though, it may take a while. If people would vaccinate responsibly in the first place, perhaps there would be more progress in changing the laws to reflect the newer knowledge.

Thank goodness our county doesn't even require rabies vaccinations. We do get them for the TNR kitties, but I'm SO HAPPY I don't need to get them for our indoor-only kitties. The vets we see in other places do require them, but also thankfully they're willing to give it a skip because of our feelings on vaccinations. They don't disagree. Unnecessary once done as kittens.

Slightly off topic, but does anyone here refuse to get rabies every year even if it's required in your state? I'm kind of debating doing this and taking them for rabies every other or every 3rd year...or is there someway they track that? I've already been using several different vets because I haven't found one I'm completely happy with.

I was debating the same thing, but I receive letters every year from the City..... and in it it says that failing to vaccinate can lead to a $2,000 fine.
I only received for 2 cats, so I might skip the third one next year, Will see.....

Well, for those where it is required, what about asking the vet about titre testing? Or calling the city to ask about it? Would they accept a titre test in lieu of a rabies vaccination? Can't hurt to ask....

Not accepted in Dallas.... I did a Titer for the 4-in-one, and skipped that vaccine...... But nope, not in Dallas.

I'm in PA and I'm pretty sure it's required by the state here. I'm just wondering if anyone would actually notice if I didn't vaccinate them every single year? Who keeps track of stuff like that? My oldest 2 should be due next month and I'm just considering my options...
