Husband and I started weaning our 4 week old kitten about a day and a half ago. He is not interested AT ALL. I put his formula in a shallow dish and dabbed some on his lip. He doesn't even try to explore his dish or formula. Today we tried the KMR 2nd step. He sniffed around at it for a few seconds, but again, won't even stay in front of a dish to try and explore his food. He just cries and cries for his bottle...which he recognizes and runs to every time he sees it. I don't want to starve kitty, but he needs to learn to lap food! How long does this take? Advice please we're worried!

It does takes time.  Normally, when mommy is around, this is no big deal. It comes when it comes, and they have always mom.   He would also have moms example.

Here, you are giving him bottle, it would be easier for you if he ate himself..

Nay, dont try to deny him bottle to force him eat himself.  Just keep trying, in a non forcing way.

If you dont have other cats around who can show him, you can even try to show him on yourelf.  :)

Good luck!.

It won't be instant, weaning is a process. Bottle babies are sometimes a little delayed as well not having mum to show them how it's done. Keep trying a few times a day, he'll get there eventually.

This website offers tips between weeks 5 & 6 for weaning orhpans http://kitten-rescue.com/weaning.html

Ok that makes us feel a lot better! I don't want to starve the poor thing! He's a playful little one and I want him to get all the nutrients he needs so he can keep up his energy! What we're doing is dabbing the formula on his mouth and just making the bottle less available to him. But eventually after he gets a tiny bit off of our fingers we let him have some from the bottle. Luckily for us, he doesn't need to eat as much and don't have to get up in the middle of the night for him anymore
