Sweet, sweet Tango. You came to us in Oct., 2010, just a few days after we lost Pixel. We normally don’t look at new cats after just losing one, but it seemed the right thing to do. When we found you in the shelter, I was getting overwhelmed and thinking about giving up looking at cats. You had other ideas.
From the moment you climbed into Carol’s arms, you never stopped purring. You rubbed your head on her chin and rolled over for belly rubs. Then you came into my arms and did the same. You sold us on how sweet and loving you were. We brought you home, a wonderful 4 month old tabby.
Everyone in the house accepted you almost immediately. It was so smooth that we even let you run loose the very first night. You brought play and lots of love into our house. You insisted on sleeping on Carol’s chest when she was on the computer. You eased the pain of losing Pixel with your sweetness.
When Chaser (1 year old) and Spice (3 month old) came in Sept., 2011, you welcomed them. You cuddled with Spice – it was so wonderful to see. When Ghost came into our lives (via a hit-by-car event), you accepted her as well. You didn’t have a mean or crabby bone in your body. I think you liked having other cats close to your age to play with. But you always loved snuggles with your Moms.
We called you Tango Mango, our Chunky Monkey…and you topped 14 pounds. You still wanted to be in our arms for lovings. We held you for as long as we could…14 pounds was heavy!
Looking back, we realize now that things started to change in late spring. We lost Velcro so unexpectedly (saddle thrombus), and just didn’t notice. Then little Topaz came home in early July, and for the first time you weren’t happy to see a new kitten. You were grumpy, but we initially weren’t concerned. When your grumpiness increased, and we realized how much weight you had lost, we took you in to the vet. When the bloodwork came back normal, we drove 2 hours to the nearest vet school to have you evaluated. The diagnosis was the worst three letters I’ve ever seen…FIP.
We learned a lot about that awful disease. We hoped that we had caught it early enough and the prednisone would give us at least a few months with you. That was not to be. You continued to deteriorate and lose interest in life. So we let you go peacefully…that was the final kindness we could offer.
We miss you so much, Tango. It hurts to know that we only had you for a few years. You were such a wonderful, sweet cat…you deserved a much longer life. Rest in peace, sweety. Romp with Pixel and the others that have gone before you. You will always be in our hearts.
