My sister rescued a kitten she saw get hit by a car.  He has a broken leg and jaw.  I would say he is around 4 or 5 months old.  He is not eating.  He hisses when we go near him.  He has a vet appoitment tomorrow, but if I am not able to handle him not sure what good that will do.  I'm not sure I will be able to medicate him or force feed him.  He has started to meow a bit when we go in the room, but still hisses.  Any advice would be much appreciated!

You can try to wrap him up in a toga / burrito, when you must handle him.   Use a thick towel for it.

Immobilized this way, he will get submissive, and let you do what should be done.

This is a very mild way, used also on home cats who do hate to have their nails clipped.

He will be surely easier to handle when he has "landed".  Recognizes you arent his enemies, but trying to help.

If you can get a Feliway diffuser or spray, you can test it too.  And or set on calm, soft, relaxing music.

One positive point.  If he is feral for real, and he is wounded now, you are helping him. He will after a while surely recognize you are helping him when he is in need.

This will make his socialization easier! Will go almost automatic.

The easiest way to socialize ferales is when they are kittens, 2-7 weeks. Later on it is still possible, but more and more difficult as more time goes by.

There is one exception though: if they get hurt / sick, seek help, and get it. THEN the Window opens wide again  during the recovery and convalescence time.

Tx a lot for caring!

Welcome to our Forums!

Good luck!

Oh the poor little dear. Very, very kind of you and your sister to get him to the vet. Another option if you can't get him toweled or wrapped up, Put a carrier in the small room ( hopefully he is a confined area?), you can encourage him right into that carrier by corralling him in the direction of the carrier. They always will choose to go in to get away from your persistent "herding" of him. Will be a safe dark place to hide. Have a towel draped over the carrier with just the door propped open. As Stefan said, he will know your are trying to help, he is in a desperate situation and in pain and must know you want to help him and care about him. Please let us know what happens. So sorry he is badly injured. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Good news his jaw is not broken.  He ate on his own today.  His leg is broken and he will have surgery.

He is estimated to be 3 months old.  He didn't hiss at the vet and he let them hold him, but it's another story at home.  I hope with time and effort he will warm up to us.

Thanks for the replies.

YAY :bigthumb: :happy3: I am thrilled to hear about his jaw. I was worried as that could really have been a life threatening condition. SO GLAD!!!! The leg will be alright after surgery. Poor little one. It is wonderful what you are doing for him. Bless your heart :D :heart3: I am certain that this little feral kitten will fall deeply in love with you quickly for everything you are doing to save him. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
