My 6year old cat had mouth surgery and must be on soft food for a while. What is a good brand that has no chunks, flakes, or cubes? She loves Fancy Feast ocean whitefish + tuna "classic" as it is a soft and even consistency but as a steady diet I would like to feed her a better quality food. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Mittsie & thank you.

Welcome to the forums!

The Fancy Feast Classics aren't really bad quality. Although I would feed more of a variety of flavors---too much fish isn't good for cats. Most brands have "paté" or "loaf" flavors, just look for those. Although I've noticed some brands aren't very clear about the texture of their foods. . .but usually you can tell by shaking the can.

Natural Balance, EVO, and Nutro Max Cat are some I've used, and seem to have a nice smooth texture. You'll probably get more responses if you start a thread in the Nutrition section :).

Welcome to TCS!

I know when one of my cats was sick years ago the vet had me give her a canned food specificially for recovering kitties.  I believe it was by Science Diet.  It was a mushy texture.  But to be honest; I she wouldn't eat it.  I'd see if it's ok to add a little warm water to a pate style food to make it softer if necessary.

I've found out that the pate is exactly what she likes. I wonder if I'll be able to switch her back to the dry food after she's healed. I'm having doubts, she loves this pate too much!  Thanks for your reply.  MagMitts

I have tried few canned foods and they are good for cats. One of them is Nutro Max Cat.

Thanks... and I found out that my cat likes the pate form of canned cat food because it is very ground up, no chunks, cubes, flakes... all smooth.

Canned food is MUCH healthier for kitties than kibble is :). So if you possibly can, keeping her on the canned is best. Or as much wet food as you can manage. Here's some more on the subject: www.catinfo.org

Dear Willowy -- I thank you SO MUCH for directing me to catinfo.org.  I learned a ton of information I did not know regarding my cat's IBS -- I will stick to the canned cat food instead of dry for now on and look for grain free, etc ... all the details noted on the website.  I had no idea that canned is considered better than dry, I always thought it was the opposite.  And interestingly, since she's been on the wet food she has not (knock on wood) had diarrhea as I had feared and have been amazed, proof enough for me that this canned food IS better for her.  Thanks a million!

Hey MagMitts
There are a lot of good brands out there.  You might try adding a little water to the wet food to help with the sore mouth.  FF classics are a good food but if you want to try different flavors and textures you might want to check out the 2 lines my cats like and eat the most of.  The 2 lines are Nutro Max Cat and Nutro Natural Choice and you can find info about them here at http://www.nutro.com/natural-cat-food.aspx The Max Cat is the more economical of the 2 lines if budget is a concern.  Mine eat both lines of wet as well as a few other premium brands which they like for different flavors and textures.  The feral cat will only eat FF wet food.  That is all she will touch so that is what she gets
She loves the stuff and won't go near ANY of the premium brands I've offered her.

Hi NutroMike,

Thanks a million for the suggestion on the Nutro brand.  You're so right that no matter how GOOD FOR THEM the food is, if they won't eat it youo have to feed them what they will eat.  I've been reading and have learned that FF is not as bad as one has been conditioned to think but I am going to go for the better brands as the steady diet and it seems NO GRAINS is the better food too.  Wellness says "no grains" right on the can.  I'm going to check out the Nutro line.  Have a happy day! MagMitts

I would also recommend Natural Balance canned cat food.  They have a lot of  flavors of Ultra Premium and it’s a nice, even texture.  We’ve been buying these for years and my kitties favorites are the Ocean Fish and the Turkey & Giblets.  You can’t beat the ingredients and quality.

Yes, that's a good one. Angel likes Pate' as well, so if he is not eating raw, (95% now!)  He gets by nature, or Before the Grain, both are pate'.

Both are 95 & 96% protein.
