Ok so.

On August 16th Kitty was taken to the vet, confirmed as having earmites, and was given a dose of milbemite in both ears. It's now the 25th and he's still doing some scratching. Today when I checked and cleaned his ears he still had some black-brown gunk in his ears.  Some of it seemed ' fresh '

I did a pretty through cleaning of his ears before he was treated with the ear mite meds to make sure he got optimal coating of the ear with the medicine. Though milbemite claims to be able to work through the ear gunk.

I will be taking him to the vet on Thursday Augst. 30th because of an eye issue and I'll be getting him checked for mites again.

Is it normal for the cat to still have symptoms after treatment ? Still be getting the goo in his ears ? Do you think it's possible he's developed an infection in his ears after the fact ? When I took him in first vet said mites only no infection.

I washed everything he sleeps on in the house when we got home and scrubbed down the bathroom. I even steam cleaned the carpets and bought him brand new cat cubes to sleep in so the other could be trashed for mites.

He's strictly an indoor single cat at so I'm not even sure where he picked up the earmites from. :X

You might want to give the vet a call and ask.  A second dose of medication may be necessary.  The gook you're describing may also just be stuff surfacing and may not be a new infestation.  I don't have any experience with ear mites personally but a friend of mine had a cat with them.  He had a really hard time getting rid of them.  I don't recall what medication he was using but it took 3 rounds of it to eliminate it completely.  I do believe that the cat had developed a secondary infection from the scratching as well so this might have been the reason for 3 rounds of medication.  Sorry I couldn't be more help with this.

I know some of the mite treatments are on a three dose system. Milbemite is a single dose system. :( Ugh.

Some earmite treatments only kill the adults, so you have to treat again at 3 weeks to get any new adults emerging from eggs.

Vet told me when we were in that it was a single dose kills all. I read the packet the vials of meds came in while at the vet and it says it kills all stages. I also looked up the medical information

via Milbemite's webpage

Fast

With MILBEMITE OTIC Solution, one quick application by your veterinarian is all you need. It kills 99 to 100% of ear mites in just 7 to 30 days.

I'm hoping it's just irritation and the stuff working it's way out where I could not clean. It'll be checked at the vet's on Thursday anyway just to be sure. There's no smell from his ears so :X I am hoping it's not some sort of infection. I'm more worried about the fact that he's still doing some scratching but more reading says the gook itself can cause irritation so I'll just have to keep doing the cleaning!

I get the feeling he'll probally be needing another dose though. I didn't think to ask to purchase another dosage when I was there as the vet said it was quite rare to need a second dose using milbemite. :X

Oi vey.

When l adopted one of my cats, he came with earmites, fleas, and probably worms (they didn't test, they just treated).

They treated him with Revolution, which is supposed to deal with earmites, and also treated his ears on the spot as the infestation was pretty bad. Although he was dosed with Revolution, l did have to go back to the vet two more times to get his ears treated as the mites just wouldn't go away.

Yes. I'll be looking into it. Just irritates me now because a 200$ vet appointment has not gotten rid of the problem. :(

Today when I cleaned his ears though they looked perfectly normal and only had a little of the gunk in them. Quite strange.
