In our county, ferals caught and taken to the SPCA are always killed, no questions asked.  In fact, the Animal Control Officers often track and hunt down ferals, even those with ear tips.

With the help of a local s/n group, our town has started a program wherein feral caregivers can register their colonies.  While there is no money available for caregivers, the s/n will help with trapping, vetting and s/n.  There is a small food program as well for those who need it.  This is just getting off the ground, so there are obstacles being overcome every day.  But the point is, the obstacles are being overcome!

There are no fees, just basically, support and companionship for the caregivers.  At this point, it is voluntary but the mayor was the first one to sign up!  I am hoping his lead wil be followed.

Anyone else have experience with this type of program?  I'd love to hear from others about their experiences ...

That is so sad about Animal Control and their plight to euthanize feral cats :(. That would be a wonderful program for the feral caretakers. Hopefully that would make their feral cats safe from Animal Control. We don't have a program to register feral colonies but my county supports TNR and the efforts of caring residents to become feral caretakers that TNR cats. :)
